Forums - Sony - Sony Refuses To Replace Backwards-Compatible PS3s

KylieDog said:
Sounds like bullshit. They -have- to replace the faulty PS3 with a model equal to or better than the one he sent to them.

They cannot just say "We can't do anything with it" and try and fob off with an inferior model.

^this. Mine was a launch 60gb and I was still able to get the same model when it broke. I wonder what country the author lives in.

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

In Canada they said they have a lot of 60GB in there warehouse so you can still gets it.

Ironically, the person is dealing with Sony Canada.  Below is an update of the original post. -- Mike from Morgantown

Update: Just for the record, he's dealing with a repair center in Ontario, Canada, the same one with which I dealt with late last year and had a positive experience with. I wrote a full article praising them about it. Mind you, I bought a 40GB model, so I avoided this situation.

I linked to his TAWKN.com profile. I hope he's okay with that...

Update 2: here's a screenshot of the MTC repair status screen, with his name, Sony Style Store number, and work order numbers blurred out, at his request. You can still see his PS3 model and serial number, however.

Thanks for adding this Mike from Morgantown :)

I think the difference is this is a retailer's extended warranty.  Sony Style is not SCEA.  The Sony Style "extended warranty" would be no different than a Gamestop/Best Buy extended warranty.  The customer in this instance should look at the warranty he bought to determine if Sony Style is allowed to exchange for a different model number.  In this case, he would have been better off not buying the Sony Style extended warranty and just dealt with SCEA directly.  It would have cost $150, but he would have received the same model back.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Sony replaces any broken PS3, but since backwards-compatible skus are no more in production...

If true this is illegal I believe. They should keep enough units in stock in order to honor the warranties.

I just recently had my ps3 replaced, and my ps3 was sent to the coquitalium repair centre in bc.

my 60gb was replaced with another 60gb. here's proof ( right click > view image. the serial number of the ps3 they sent me in this image is incorrect, my refurb ps3 has a different serial #):

I understand completely.  I did see a brand new 80gig Motorstorm bundle for sale on Vancouver Island last month in a grocery store. LOL!  It was still $499.00
