i doubt this, they will offer him BC if one in stock, if not you have to wait one manufactured.

it never comes with can appeal.

yes PS3 consoles break... everything breaks , but they are well below 3%.

which are mainly power  sources, and Lens problems, things commons to notebooks, and pcs and even the wii.

Others on this site have claimed a 1-2% failure rate, not bad seeing the wii has just about the same failure rate as well.  In contrast to 360 is why you never hear about it breaking down (ps3), but yeah it happens sometimes.

This indeed sounds bullshit. Sorry man, but when I send my PS3 80gb backwards compatible last march, I got it back repaired the week after, same model and same serial and manufacturing date since the day I bought it.

Can't dismiss this account, but it does smell suspicious.

The SCE service rep was pretty clear in reassuring me that they'd replace my broken console for the same model (hence entering the specific model as marked on the console serial number).

I actually waited a couple months before sending in the service request for my dead 60GB unit.

Box arrived late (no attempt was made by shipping to drop off the box; they just sent it back to distro and left it there). A second box was promptly shipped when I called the service department back and I had my replacement 60GB console after about a week.

Not sure how they're going to keep doing this for MoBos and cases that are no longer in production, but obviously they have a supply on hand, and the rate of failure is not high enough to exceed the demand.

Mine was clearly a refurb; it had the original protective plastic wrap on the casing they use to prevent shipping scratches.

But most importantly: this is the FIRST account I've heard about someone being told they couldn't get a replacement PS3 that matched what they were sending in.

he has 1900 PS2 games !!!!!

They will send your original console back if it can be repaired for something simple like a BRD drive replacement, or a PSU replacement (two of the most common problems).

If the actual MoBo itself is dead, you'll likely get a refurb in a new casing.

Typically it's faster and easier for them to just ship you a refurb if they have them ready to go. The sooner the buyer gets the console back, the better for SCE.

mine broke recently & they said i'll either be getting same 1 back or the 60gb refurb box should arrive soon

About a year ago, backwards-compatible 80GB PS3s were still being sold in stores. I chose to buy a 40GB model because I wasn't sure what would happen if it broke after they stopped manufacturing. Now, I know.

An anonymous TAWKN.com user just called me, distraught. His PS3 has been at Sony's repair center for three weeks now. He bought the 80GB PS3 with backwards-compatibility. Today, he called in to get a status update, and was told that it was beyond repair, and, because Sony doesn't make that model anymore, that they can't replace it, despite the fact that he bought four years' worth of Sony Care extended warranty for it, for a total of five years. They offered to give him a new model 80GB PS3.

He argued with them that he is not just losing a PS3, but PS2 support (that's over 1900 PS2 games that he can no longer play), extra USB ports, plus the built-in card readers. Sony's reply? Too f@#$ing bad.

This guy is very angry at Sony, and rightfully so. They didn't offer him anything but a far inferior model than what he bought about 12 months ago, which he says is unacceptable - and I agree.

At the VERY least, they should be trying to make up for this to him and other users who paid $100 extra for a console that has only one life left to live. If I were in his situation, I'd be demanding either a few oood free games, or a consolation package consisting of: a USB hub, USB memory card readers, PS2 slim, and PS2 component cable.

"If I wanted to go through this much bullshit, I would have bought an Xbox."

Ouch. Understand, I've talked with this guy over the years, and he was instrumental in my own purchase of a PS3. If Sony doesn't remedy this in some manner, I don't think he'll be helping sell their products anymore.

Of course, if they released a firmware tonight with complete software-based PS2 support for all PS3s, then the blow might not be so bad.

If there are any developments, I'll be sure to update.

Has anybody else heard anything like this?

Sigh, another stupid and false post on VGC here, any 80GB PS3 with B/C come with 4 USB ports and built in card readers on market? Please TS,try to make your post more sense.

This just in... Discontinued models have been discontinued.

I mean, I know it's annoying and all, but the only surprising thing in this story is that they did replace backwards compatible units with BC units for a while.
