Forums - Sony - Sony Refuses To Replace Backwards-Compatible PS3s

I am sure it will all turn out fine. From the original link:

Update 3: I just called MTC myself, and, shockingly, they told me they had a lot of 80GB backwards-compatible PS3s in stock. I recorded the call on my digital camera because I was not expecting them to answer me with that answer...

I played back the call to Steve, and since it was Sony Canada who called to inform him they had none left and he would be stuck with a new model 80GB, he will be calling them directly at about noon (less than an hour away, as he's in a meeting until then). I'll record that call too, and get to the bottom of this.

It's unclear why Sony Canada is directly involved in this situation, but I am assuming it's because he purchased his Sony Care from the local Sony Style store, rather than directly from MTC, as I did.

Update 4: I just recorded Steve's phone call in to Sony's support. After bleeping out the audio portions he wishes to remain confidential, I will upload it to YouTube and post it right here.

Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion of this adventure in Sony Canada support.

Well needless to say I am quite pleased with this outcome :)

Thank you all for participating !

Seems to have been handled pretty well judging from the youtube video. Looks like he will be getting his PS2 backwards compatible 80GB PS3 afterall.

Sounds like the Sony Style shop employees were misinformed or it is standard procedure to first offer a new newer (cheaper) PS3 model first, this then goes forward unless the customer asks for the older model PS3 (more limited supply).

Not suprising (most shops operate like that), but it's nice to hear the repair center has plenty of them in stock for replacement.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

Actually, we were both hopeful after that conversation, too. BUT... he got called back shortly after on his cell phone, and the Sony rep told him the same thing they told him yesterday - he's screwed. He's getting a new-model 80GB PS3 tomorrow (that's the scheduled arrival at Sony Style local outlet), and they wouldn't even tell him a reason WHY they can't send a refurb old-model 80GB PS3 from MTC instead - they just refused.

It's even more confusing to me, now... I don't understand. In any case, he's losing out pretty majorly, and he's decided he's just going to "bend over and take it" as he says. I think it's pretty sad, overall, especially that Sony Canada rep who gave us the false hope. But then, that isn't likely his fault - he probably just assumed there's no reason why they couldn't send him one of the refurbs from MTC, since they told me that they have a lot of them.

Sony would never do this to a customer, i think you are lieing

Give me one good reason why I would make this up. I run a PlayStation-ONLY fan site.. With ZERO banner ads, NO AdWords or AdSense or whatever. I have Amazon links on game profiles, and the search, and that's about it... I don't make money from visitors - the site is a hobby, and 100% volunteer. So tell me, WHAT do I have to gain from making up a story like this? Especially when I wrote a lengthy article on the same site, praising MTC / Sony when my very own PS3's Blu-ray drive died?

How about you go and read the full story, and listen to the two phone calls, and read the guy's comments on the story, or call Sony yourself and ask them about his PS3's serial number?

I've seen way too many fanboys write this off as a joke or lie over the past 24 hours, it makes me sick. I LOVE my PS3. I love my PSP. And I love my PS2. That's why I run my site, which doesn't cover Wii, DS, or 360 news at all.

Nobody ever thinks Sony will treat them badly until it happens to them.

Nobody ever thinks their condom will break, until your dad's did.

The plot thickens!

wow sorry

my brother is going to be sending in his 60GB this or next week.

i'll let you know if he gets shafted.

I can understand them having to make adjustments to a point (although they really messed up not having enough stock to cover the extended warranties).

That said, he should demand a new PS2 in addition to the PS3, or the option they refund the entire price of the PS3 and extended warranty and he can purchase his own.
