I think it goes with having so many games released. With so many substitute retail games (and WiiWare) it's more competitive.
I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

The only games that were $60 were ones that included something extra like a Microphone. Most EA games have always been $49 for the Wii.
Nintendo usually sells their shovelware/junky games for 40 dollars or less on the first day. Good games- like mario titles- are usually 50.
The DS price system has junky games at 19.99 , decent games at 30, and very good games at 35 (at the local walmart anyway).
The Wii seems to have a lot more price variability. And it seems to be more accepted on the Wii.
Rare/Microsoft tried that with the Banjo sequel (released at $40) and it did not have the desired effect. Whether it was the game or the target consumers though, I do not know.

I am Mario.I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. You put up a game for $20-30, and it flies off the shelves, then the retailer orders more. You launch at $50, and many games slowly drip off the shelf. It earns you more revenue per unit, but the slow sales cause the retailer to think twice about ordering more stock, dropping your overall revenues. Oh, and I hear Ghostbusters Wii is launching at $40, too. I wonder if that means it's short... |
ghostbuster=same length, different graphics
