What the **** is wrong with the guy in the picture? His mouth....area......

That is not a guy. Its an ape-god.

LMAO!  I thought it might be a little 3 o'clock shadow

LOL!

Rofl.......

Never heard of an ape-god before. What religion is it a part of?

He is a character from the indian epic Ramayana http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramayana

These got written at the same time as Illiad and Odessey. Pretty cool hero actually, when he was pissed he turned into a giant. He could jump and travel huge distances and ya once he lifted up an entire island on his shoulders and took it for a ride. I really liked the guy...errr I mean ape

ya piracy works the best in India. You can't blame them really. A PS3 costs more then 3/4 months income for about 50% of the population. On top of that what really kills is the cost of software. Heck a single game can make you buy one month's food lol. Piracy is the only way to play games out there I am sure even Sony didn't mind with the PS2 coz at least they were selling some consoles.

same in Pakistan. You can get 360/Wii games for half a dollar, add to that the fact that the PS3 costs alot more than the others and you have some stiff competition.

That's how Polish gaming market started if it weren't  for rampart ps1/ps2/xbox piracy most people wouldn't even start playing on consoles and now a lot of them grown up and are buying their ps3/x360 games.

exactly. Thats how I started and now I have a PS3, Xbox360, PS2 and a gamecube and Xbox (sold to ebay)

and must have spent at least close $5k on games. Coz I got hooked.

just to let you into a few facts why sony is optimistic:

1. the population of india is over 1.2billion

True

2. over 80% of the population is Hindu

True

3. hanuman is the hindu ape god and this game is based on him and hindu religiuos literature.

4. hindus pay up a lot of money when it comes to religion, whether its buying ornaments, statues and various other religious goods .

Games are not a form of worship.

5. buying a pirated game based on their religion and god maybe seen as a sin. hence the number of sales being higher than predicted. i can imagine a lot of hindus importing this game for their children to.

I seriously doubt that.
clever move from sony, its a shame they dont have the same level of intelligence when it comes to marketing.

Not every game will be about apes and hinduism. And I hope not every game will be as poorly made as the trailer on the first page suggests.

If the rich countries already think that ps3 is too expensive then a poor country(with a bright looking future and good economic growth) will think that as well. I've recently seen a documentary about indian countries and most people are still poor.

Plus, this good economy won't mean that the country will become first-world overnight. This'll be a slow process which may take up to 20-30 years.

@786ali

i agree with games not being a form of worship, but its a game based on their religion and one of their gods. im not saying they will worship the game, but they will support it!

look at what hindus have done to support their culture in the past.

they have stopped the mass slaughter of bse infected cows, they have saved other similar animals too, and they are known to pay money for anything related to their religion.

obviously not every game will be religious, but dont expect this to be the last game of its kind. there are ongoing hindu god series, cartoons and dramas. it is just like anime in japan. if there is a space in the market, it will be wise for sony to expose it.

Might as well tap the indian market. They have over a billion potential customers.

Something else which needs to be considered is commercial success. Will there be enough sales to gain a profit and encourage more games? Since India is new to the gaming industry, devs may quickly be put off by a loss and may decide not to continue to support the industry. Once the confidence is there then investment will follow and the industry will bloom. But only time will tell...

And tap it they will.  All day and night, 24/7, and at 10 cents an hour.
