Forums - General - What should Obama do about somali pirates?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090414/ap_on_re_af/piracy

"I want to be very clear that we are resolved to halt the rise of piracy in that region and to achieve that goal, we're going to have to continue to work with our partners to prevent future attacks," Obama said at a news conference Monday.

Great rescue by the Seals the other day, but what now?

obama will talk to our friends but what to do next?

Talk to the Somalis?

Talk to the pirates?

Give them money so they won't hijack anymore?

Send troops to Somalia?

Bomb the crap out of em?

What did the pirates expect.... they hijacked a American Ship, kidnaped the captian and thought the US wouldn't do anything.  But the law on this is murky as the events happen in internation waters.

'FROM CNN....

  • Legal hurdles abound if Somali captive is flown to United States for prosecution
  • Suspect in U.S. military custody could be turned over to Kenya or another country'
  • The americans could attack somalia by bombing bases (limited as the pirates would just move) and what about invading the country.  Does america want another war and would other countrys help by sending troops and supplies?  But then again why should American blood be spilt having another war in Somalia while the rest of tyhe world stand by and watches.

My option would be to Blow every pirate ship out of the water (simple).

Perhaps they should just do what the Americans and British did when there were high levels of piracy in the Caribbean... flood the waters with battleships.

I would not bomb them or send troops. The pirates live amongst civilians. If we bomb them, there would indubitably be collateral damage. I am uncertain if the current increase in warships will quash the threat of piracy in the region. Combating the threat will require more ships and increased coordination-for example, intelligence swapping-, and I am dubious about the various naval forces achieving such a high level of coordination. Effectively addressing this issue is quite the quandary for President Obama and the international community. In the short term, there are a few measures that can be taken: implementation of early warning systems on ships; increase in the number of crew members whose job is to detect potential threats; implementation of automated fire monitors at strategic locations on the ship. These measures will not end piracy, but they will allow ships to fend off the pirates while a long term solution is devised.

The problem with the pirates is actually in Land, getting rid of their ships wont change anything since they can buy new ones. It would require quite a large operation to eliminate their inland bases.

Somalia as a country is in chaos, chaos which once caused america to enter and we all know how it ended, so i really dont know how america can react, either with full force or maybe increase the number of patrols. (The ocean near aden gulf and somalia are arleady patroled by NATO and the EU)

Yeah, Pakistan had to help out America. :)

what I cannot understand is; why can't some of the world's most advanced navies catch these pirates though they have satellite imaging and other such tracking methods?

Well there is simply one problem. Its the amount of traffic in that Region, this is possibly one of the busiest places in sea transport in the world, with thousands of ships everyday passing somalian coast. Also it is the size of that coast and NATO/EU have only limited number of vessels available in that region, and they cannot cound on Somalian help when this country is in so much chaos,  and pirates can basically struck everywhere.

Everyone asks the US to stop policing the world, except for when the world needs it.

I say the US does nothing. Let the UN figure it out.

Yes, please don't mess up another country more than it already is. If America sends it troops then expect another Afghanistan or Iraq. You went there before and Pakistan had to save you.
