Ever heard about the N64 development?
"Project reality" would crush its competitors, no matter it still was cartridge-based and came out two years after the PS/Saturn.

Well Sony lied to Nintendo about the deal.  They were susposed to make the deal 50/50, but Sony contract stated that they would own all rights over Nintendo.  Now that's cold Sony.  As far as the restrictions go, Nintendo was never arrogant, but they used to be very picky about what 3rd party games came to Nintendo.  Especially since they were coming out of the era of the video game crash.
