Forums - Sony - Why do so many people assume that God of War III will be a system seller?

No one game is going to sell a $400 console on its own unless it appeals to adults who make money (ala GT5). Who cares though, God of War III will be a amazing title for the other 20-25 million PS3 owners. PS3 sales aren't going to increase a lot until there is a price drop, plain and simple. All I know is anyone who does not have a PS3 will be missing out.

a few people around the world might be holding off till GoWIII comes out. and when it does they buy a ps3 and GoW. so yeah GoWIII will be a system seller

Well if you are slasher fan PS3 will offer superior library for you:

Gow III, Bayonetta, NGS2, NGS1, Heavenly Sword, DMC4 compared to X360 with only
Bayonetta, NG 2, DMC4

but i don't see this as a huge demographic

or maybe peole belive release of Gow III will be huge impulse for ps2 owners who liked I&II to upgrade to ps3.

Anyway I don't see Gow III pushing man consoles - maybe as much as Killzone 2 but nowhere near MGS4

A $400 console is not an impulse buy to the vast majority of consumers.

The main reason why GoW isn't likely to result in a huge explosion of sales is that many of the GoW fanbase started playing the franchise when the PS2 was already well under $200. In other words, within impulse buy price range.

What may well happen is that fans of GoW who haven't bothered with the PS3 may end up waiting for the much expected price drop instead. But if they happen to hit on or about at the same time... sales jumps can't be fully attributed to GoWIII.

Realistically, we'll see a decent bump in sales that will trail off over the following three weeks with the eventual crossover into holiday sales.

A fair comparison would be to take a look at the bump in sales for the PSP when Chains of Olympus was released. We should see similar or better results for GoWIII and the PS3.

Blaydcor . Never under estimate the power of what people consider a fucking badass!! I know people that are not even gamers that consider Kratos one of the coolest icons ever.

Okay.

I'm a huge fan of God of War. The first one was one of my favorite games by far of the last get when it came out, and even I let myself get a little too hyped for the sequel, it actually lived up to my expectations. I enjoyed Chains of Olympus though not as much as the main series titles. I think the games are fantastic, and David Jaffe's involvement aside, I want nothing more for them to reach a broader market and sell even better.

But despite all this, I in no way seeing it being a system selling title OR the kind of title that will have massive Halo-esque sales.

Look at the first two. God of War 1 sold 3.2 million, II sold 2.45--this on the PS2's INSTALL BASE. Granted the percentage of the PS3's demographic that is predisposed to God of War's types of games is much greater than the PS2's. And, yes, I do believe that the series is a more well known name now, even more so by III's launch. And with less competition as far as AAA titles go compared to the PS3, it will probably reach a higher attach rate than either of the first two.

But still...it's just not the type of game that people buy a system for, or preorder by the millions half a year before it comes out. My question: why? Why has God of War III had this weighty burden of being a colossal seller placed on its shoulders?

If you think it WILL be that kind of seller, go ahead, disagree, argue, try and persuade me. I'm just curious what other people think.

You are right i dont think god of war 3 will be a system seller but all we can do is try to make it the best out of it.Everybody reading this i want you to do rhis plz!!!

Whoever owns a PS3 in the US, go buy God of War III on March 16,2010

God of War III will be the 2010 Game of the Year.

I point you all to okeys sig

When you look at the worldwide sales, sure. The series IS a big deal in America though, where PS3 has been struggling.

Consider the first game sold 2.5 million in America alone. That's Final Fantasy/MGS/Zelda territory. You think those games aren't system sellers?

Oh, it's a system seller alright. Remember, the PS3 is going to be $299/299EUR sometime this fall, and the economy should start recovering by the end of the year.

The thing is, gaming has become such a huge industry that no one single genre can carry a platform anymore in the way that Halo carried the original Xbox or GTA3 carried the PS2.

Sony predicts 36 million PS3s shipped by 31st March 2010, so perhaps 34.5 million sold when God of War III releases.

But on topic, no, it won't be a massive system seller. But it will sell some. Think somewhere between Killzone 2 and MGS4. Closer to the KZ2 side.
