ROFL this is greatness. Although the odds of the PS3 winning are perhaps a 0.1% I would laugh if Sony would dramatically turn things around. I for one am satisfied with what they have done in this past year alone. I mean seriously, they started at like a 600$ price point with Heavenly Sword probably being the only worthwhile launch game (to me), horrible PR, etc. And now they have a strong exclusive lineup and more to come. MGS4, LBP (for a new game/series, it was really good), KZ2 (dramatically improving every aspect of the ambitious but letdown that KZ1 was), VC, Demon's Souls (taking true gamers back to their roots no longer holding their hand), Uncharted 1, Uncharted 2, InFamous(despite glitches, still solid gameplay and great storyline, ESPECIALLY for a sandbox game), etc, etc (and yes Flower surprised me too). Coming lineup includes MAG, WKC(loved Level- 5's Dark Cloud 1 and 2), GOW3 (most anticipated), The Last Guardian (Team ICO can do it well), Heavy Rain, The Last Rebellion, Ar Tonelico 3(if it gets a good localization, although niche, it is still promising as the storyline from the other 2 was very solid with good gameplay), GT5 (it's GT, what else can I say), Final Fantasy Vs XIII, Agent, etc. Not to mention unannounced games (oh yea I forgot 3D Dot Game Heroes).
The games are there now, so the excuse of "but there are no games on the PS3" no longer applies. The current price point is now something reachable to many especially when you consider what you are paying for. The Wand has the potential to grab a piece of the casual market pie. Although I personally don't care for motion controls and I still hold my position of the Wii being a gimmick system (granted as much of a Sony fan that I am, I will ALWAYS borrow a Wii just for Zelda and other unnoticed gems like Muramasa Demon Blade and No More Heroes), but yes I fell for the gimmick for 1 game and 1 game only: RE4.
What I have loved about Sony (especially now that they are cornered) is how they truly look at all angles in gaming. They don't limit themselves to gimmicks or the FPS genre like *cough cough....nvm....Yes you got Resistance, KZ and Haze (can't believe I bothered to mention this game), but then you have the "different" with VC, Demon's Souls, WKC (if the georama is at LEAST like Dark Cloud 2, it will be amazing), InFamous, Uncharted (yes TPS but lots of platforming elements and amazing story), MGS4, LBP (game is beautiful), Flower (who woulda thought), and I am failing to mention several others but that's fine.
Sony fans suffered for a while on justifying their purchase, but now, it's not really hard, on the contrary, it's super easy. The PSN still plays catchup to Live (which I admit is good), but is now so close yet has managed to remain FREE. The install base has passed the 30 million mark and growing at a rapid pace.
In short the PS3 is starting to show quality without the need of gimmicks that get used in the nursing homes and by moms and aunts (once a month for moms and aunts lol). Sony just needs to keep marketing great games, do some more re-releases (GOW collection was a hit, so Team ICO games would be the next logical step). If Sony is already bringing back some gems from the PS2 in order to push awareness for sequel AAA titles coming on the PS3, they may just have found a good strategy. I still think they should have done the same for Dark Cloud 1 and 2 to raise awareness on Level-5's WKC.
@ OP : I think a better way for Sony to win the generation is to take all the old "phat" model PS3's that were stacked to the rafters in box stores and warehouses nationwide prior to slim release, turn them into the worlds largest clustered computing array.... and use it to predict winning lottery numbers and currency exchange fluctuations. After Sony tallies up a couple billion$ using this method, they should switch to using RPG's wonderfull suggestion of packing one in every happy meal. Now, it still might not work... after all, I am pretty sure Wii is more popular these days than happy meals, but it would at least put them in the running.
On a more serious note, I do not want a console like a Wii... I had a Wii, I gave it away to a family member. It now could be renamed " Wii Fit machine "
Wii sells so much, because its a different market. Anyone else trying to emulate the Wii would just fail miserably, simply because the casuals and ultra casuals are by definition the least likely group to buy two seperate consoles. Why would anyone want a Wii imitator when they already have a Wii? Or at best their casual gamign friends who introduce them to gaming have a Wii. Competing with Wii by making a cheap casual system is like competing with Coke and Pepsi by making a new Cola.
Wow... this thread got quite some input eh...
And I don't really get the joke...
