Forums - Sony - Sony’s Fiscal Year is Over - Where is the PS3 Price Cut?

Sony has stated many times that a PS3 price cut would not come during their 2008 Fiscal Year. Well, that ended a few weeks ago. It’s time to drop the price.

While a price drop was announced to coincide with the company’s new Fiscal Year, it was for the PS2, which was both inevitable and disappointing. Gamers, journalists, and analysts alike are all clamoring for Sony to make a fairly major price drop for the PlayStation 3. It’s still by far the most expensive console on the market and has been lagging behind in sales with the cheaper Wii and Xbox 360 moving more product. With the economy still down globally, slashing prices is the best way to ensure more sales for your product.

While I absolutely love my PS3, I believe the longer Sony waits to announce and implement this much needed and overdue price drop, the more they’re going to lose out on sales. People cannot afford purchasing multiple consoles in this economy and will pick up a cheaper product if needed.

So, Sony, when will see a cheaper PS3?

To make a price cut now for the PS3 is like chopping down a tree; one little slice could make the whole thing crash down. Sony is in no position to make any PS3 price cuts at this time. They know it would be risky and cost them more red ink. I would have thought that ever since the PS3 was released, Sony could have reduced the price gradually with each production cost dropping for a component. Just think about it, just a few dollars/currency off the price in a set amount of weeks due to component costs dropping would make the system profitable rather than taking chunks off the price to begin with. They wouldn't be in this situation to begin with

Certainly not until the 45nm hardware revision in July.

A price cut is not truly needed at this time, look at the weekly sales recently, especially this week... very close and with PS3 being that expensive, thats good..

I say if they don't drop the price in a few months, then they might hit a problem...

But at the same time MS will counter Sony's Price Cut, so it might not even matter...

If Sony drops the price by $100 then there's nothing Microsoft could do to counteract that, aside from matching them with a $100 cut of their own, but of course that would kill the 360.

Microsoft's counter wouldn't be as large, even if they matched the cut pound for pound, simply because of basic economics.

it will happen in November

y do it now there not doing that bad compared to the 360

there going to wait to see wat the 360 will go to b4 they drop the ps3

When the PS3 is playing equal or making profit. You want Sony to go bankrupt? Sure, then force them for a price break. I also want to see a price break to boost sales, but that won't help as most likely the PS3 will still be more expensive than the 360 and I'm sure MS will drop the prices again as counter attack. Its no use. 100$ never happened and never will, 50 the most.

lol you think MS can do a 100 cut now, 4 years into its like they will drop th eprice to 100 ? are you nuts.

MS is in no positiuon to match A potential PS3 price cut.

Maybe a $30/50 cut depending on model, but not a outright counter.

Sony held off and it worked out for them, the 360 did not get well ahead of the PS3 yet Sony did not have to cut the price by $100. After the hardware revision Sony will be able to cut the price yet continue to make the same amount of money per unit sold as they are now.

MS will cut the price of the 360 but fact of the matter is that the PS3 will be $300 thus many more people will get the PS3 and not opt for the cheaper decision. MS will just have to keep pumping out software soon, also not quite sure why MS PR are baiting Sony into dropping the price because once that happens there in trouble.
