Forums - Nintendo - Anyone find anything wrong with Punch Out!! stereotypes?

While I was listening to ListenUP podcast two weeks in a row but this week even more someone bitched about how wrong the stereotypes still being there are. Its not funny anymore and a little tasteless or whatever. Honestly what the fuck?

I find this insane. Its all fucking comdedic in the game. Its just suppose to be funny and not analyzed like this. He bitches about  how they look and the food that circles around their heads.

Why are some people so god damn sensitive? More than this I think this guy like many other gamers out there just love to bitch about anything.

These people have no life.. It's unfortunate but I choose to ignore them

Well the game is really offensive, and it always has been. But it's not the 80's anymore, so it's even weirder by today's standards. I actually can't believe they added a gay disco dancer. They even play up Glass Joe's Frenchness more than ever, possibly to capitalize on how much Americans are supposed to hate the French?

Nintendo has the right to use bad stereotypes in their game, and we all have the right to complain.

Either way, the game is fun as hell. I fought the first 4 matches and it was great. I can't wait for it to come out so I can try the multiplayer. I'm definitely getting it.

Two thoughts come to mind:

1. Nintendo is a company built on an insulting Italian stereotype.

2. Mike Tyson is still probably the most insulting racial stereotype in the Punch Out series.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Ghost, I can't believe you're serious.

I can't believe people are that bad at taking jokes. The jokes aren't tasteless, they're taking harmless stereotypes.

It'd be quite another thing if they did serious racial profiling, instead of just taking soft stereotypes that show what country the person is from and such.

MAYBE THE CONTROVERSY WILL INCREASE SALES.

Punch-Out!!! to sell 10 million confirmed.

I didn't know there was any controversy... wow.

This world is messed up.

Well I think racial stereotypes are an industry-wide problem, so every time I see it happen I think it's lame.  It's already bad enough that the vast majority of games have hunky buff white dudes, badass streetsmart black dudes, scantily clad women with breasts that would break their backs, and Asian kung fu masters and computer whizzes.

That said, yeah this game isn't as bad as most and it's Nintendo.  It's really hard to be offended by Nintendo.  They're so friendly they can sneak this stuff in and I won't care.  But I can understand why this would bother people.

My post was more serious than I intended I guess.

I played the first 4 matches, so I've only seen the first 4 intros.  It's basically just "haha he's French and a sissy," "haha he's German and dumb," "haha he's gay," and "haha he's fat and eats a lot."  And now that there's voice acting, you get to hear Doc and all his blackness.

But I do think this game handles masculinity better than most games.  Instead of being a giant steroid-driven beefcake of death, you're a scrawny kid who makes a living by beating the hell out of giant supermen.
