Super Mario World.
Super Mario All-stars is the best Mario game by a long distance. If you don't count that - Super Mario Bros. 3 but they are both better than any non-Mario platform game ever made.

| Godot said: This is very good question. I'd say that the castles design are far better in SMB3 and that the flying ships as well as the last world are pretty epic. The themed world are also a great idea that inspired many, many games. The different suits are great as is the overworld map. Super Mario World has more secrets, alternate path and hidden passages. I also really like the 4 different yoshi colors. So, I don't know... I guess SMB 3 because I played it yesterday! |
Yoshi is Great!
He is even better in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Of these two, I'd pick SMW. It's slicker, feels faster and more responsive. And I loved the secret exits.
SMB3 was a fantastic game as well, but going back, I enjoy SMW more - it's more timeless, in my opinion.
My favourite Mario game... that's too hard to decide.
SMB1 started it all for me, its the essence of what makes a Mario game. I loved SMB2 for its strange atmosphere, might just be one of my favourites. Sunshine was almost as good as Mario64, only the "tropical island" theme got a bit boring towards the end. Galaxy absolutely overwhelmed me with its creativity.
I think I'll say Mario Galaxy & Yoshi's Island.
Currently playing: NSMB (Wii)
Both are great games, but I'd give the nod to SMB3. It took a far bigger leap in quality from the previous titles than SMW did. SMB3 absolutely kills the first two entries, while SMW, as shown in this thread, isn't even considered a better game than SMB3 by some people. You'd be hard pressed to find people that would pick either the original SMB or SMB2 over SMB3.
That being said, Yoshi's Island is the title that I enjoyed the most. I know I'm definitely in the minority in regards to that though.
^^ naw, i loved SMW 2: yoshi's island.
...if your quiet, you can still hear baby mario crying out there.... lol
