You have to consider two things.

1. The series itself is in a decline. DQ8 sold worse than DQ7.

2. The game is on a handheld and portables have lower attach rates than consoles. So, you can't expect it to do too much more than DQ8 let alone DQ7.

Here is you and I differ.

1. Even though DQ 8 sold less than DQ7, I actually don't think DQ series is in the decline. I think the longer wait between DQ6 and DQ7 might have some effect.

2. I actually think it would sell that well because it's on DS. Sure, handheld has a lower attach rate than consoles. However, there will be exceptions. MHP2G is a good example. DQIX would be another exception.

Well, DQ is better on consoles whereas MH is the opposite.

The main DQ series was never on handheld before though.

Exactly. What is your basis for comparison, outlaw?  The earlier Dragon Quest ports?

Yes, and due to how the DQ games are made. They are better suited for long playthroughs.

 

The multiplayer in DQ9 should cancel some of that out, but the DQ faithful won't about that too much I think.
