Forums - Microsoft - Xbox360 version of FFXIII package to be like this?

FFXIII will fit on 3-4 DVDs.

Video compression FTW.

Did you just say that? Compression is bad!

LOL!

It would be pretty funny though if Microsoft forced Square-Enix to pay their rediculous fees that start applying to every disc after 2. Say the game comes to 43GB on the BD, then you are looking at a minumum of 7 discs for the 360. If that was to happen it could very easly make the 360 version of the game retail for $99. More than likely though, they will just drop the sound down to extreamly compressed 5.1, and bust the cut scence back to highly compressed 720p. That alone will save tons of GB's.

  1. MS does not charge fees per disc.
  2. A XBox360 disc is something like 9.3 GB. 7 discs = 63GB
  3. It is more expensive to produce a BluRay than a DVD and the 1-disc-games (almost every title) are priced the same, so there won't be a difference for FF XIII. Star Ocean (3discs) or Lost Odyssey (4 discs) aren't more expensive than other games.

Actually dual layer dvd 9 are actually 6.8 gbs not 9.3 gb which is closer to the 5 to 6 dvd range for a game that is going to fit on a 50 gb blu-ray.  also where did you hear it was cheaper?  I heard the opposite due to the licensing fee to press the disk being more with multiple disk?

Can we all put this discussion aside until we actually know how much space the game will take? Has it been released and confirmed that this game will fill an entire 50GB BD? Have they even said they are using the 50GB disc instead of the standard 25GB?

you know, there has only been one ps3 game that has actually used a dual layered blu ray disc, and that is mgs4. All the others are 25 gig single layers. The only reason mgs4 needed the extra space was it had like 80 hours worth of cinematics on the game. FFXIII might just be the same way, but I would guess that they would probably just sacrifice a lot of the cg movies for the 360 version instead of pumping out more than 4 discs.

there were talks about on an interview....either ign or gamespot....if you know me..i only go to those 2 site....anyways....i forget who got interviewed...but one of the higher ups...i'm not good with names....he was kinda of afraid it might fit on one BD...but i believe it was confirmed recently that SE would try to put it into one disc if possible....so that means it could have easily fit on 2 BD or it barely fits into one BD....other than that...i dont know specific details..

that is incredibly vague and doesn't really answer anything.  They were going to put mgs4 on 2 blu ray's as well because nobody had ever released a game on a dual layered blu ray.  It requires different programming and what not to get the dual layered game.  They might have just been talking about releasing it on 2 different single layered blu ray discs.

@gergroy

hmmm that could be it...never thought of it that way...but requiring different programming because it's dual layer??....or were u referring to sumthing else?? cuz i know it doesn't require different programming cuz of dual layer...

i guess FF will release on one BD...

lol i dont know if u zoom in u see 12 disks lol wow im gotin it on ps3

yeah, it might not require different programming, but it does require something, here, I'll link you an article.

Regarding Kojima's story that there wasn't enough space, the "real story on that" is that the game was originally planned for a single-layer Blu-ray disc, and they had everything allocated, but as they went on, they realized that a regular Blu-ray wouldn't be enough. They pondered going to two discs, but then Sony came to them with the idea of being the first to try a dual-layer, which required a lot of testing and preparation.

I guess I don't know what needed testing and preperation, but evidently it required more work.  so I don't know, but this article also talks about the 2 disc situation, so yeah.  I'm guessing you need special permission from Sony or something to use the dual layered discs.  After all, Sony was the one that came to Kojima with the idea of putting MGS4 on dual layered blu ray.
