It would appear to be cooling down in others as well. 2nd quater 2008 averaged 180k sales. Now it is dipping into the 120s without a turnaround it will be down 500k+ sales YOY in quater 2.

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 10th Jan 2009 to 28th Mar 2009:

Console Wii
Total Others
1,840,262

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 12th Jan 2008 to 29th Mar 2008:

Console Wii
Total Others
1,359,376

As you can see, it's 35% up from the same quarter of 2008. Quite the opposite of cooling down.

So you don't think that Wii sales in Others is declining month on month in 2009? The chart I linked seems to show that it is. Yes Wii is up quater on quater, it was heavily supply constrained in Jan/Feb last year.

Month to month, all consoles declined from January to February

Anyway I don't like month-to-month comparisons much. They're usually misleading due to seasonal variations.

@NJ5

Fair enough, it's only 3 months of data anyway. It will be interesting to see how the next six months play out.

well there is no signs of Wii cooling down in the West, Others sales have been much better then last year without any big releases lately, and release of big titles on PS3 or 360 did not hurt Wii sales at all.

In America Wii is getting monster sales every week (and the demand is not FULLY met yet, they close but not yet there) and it will only do better.

Japan is a problem thats a fact , but all home consoles are doing quite poorly and big software is needed to move those consoles, Wii has a good lineup for next few months so we shall see.

But that guy is wrong if he really thinks that demand is cooling, there is no sings of it.

It's about Japan. The bit about trends in Japan being seen later elsewhere only reinforces the fact that this is Japan being talked about....

OK but if it's about Japan the title is very misleading (and I don't mean the thread title, I mean the article title).

Anyway if you're right and it's about Japan, the article isn't a big deal. Even if Japan was as big a market as it used to be, it would still be declining in terms of importance, especially due to the fast growth of the European market.

I'm not even sure it is about Japan.  If it is then she has deliberately twisted facts to suit a conclusion she had already reached.  For example she talks about attach rate and the fact that Wii Sports is bundled with Wii so that increases the attach rate.  Well Wii Sports is not bundled in Japan so what the heck is she talking about?

@Hanafuda: Actually the whole article is misleading.

Not really. Wii sales down more than 50% and DS sales down too (although depending on your agenda you could round that up to declare them 'flat'). Cooling down in Japan.

WTF is this prik on about.

Japa bigger market than Europe. Has he lost his mind jheez.

Japan is way smaller than Europe. Just look at numbers on any sales website.

I think that sentence was referring to individual markets. Europe is made of many small markets together.

However I thought that the UK had surpassed Japan, but I'm not sure about that.

in terms of console HW and SW UK is bigger than Japan, but Japan's portable market still probably edges it ahead.

but UK is close and with 1/2 the population. UK is basically a mini-America when it comes down to sales trends.

@Hanafuda: It was. Whether it was intentional or not, is a different matter, but it mixed japanese and western data giving a false impression.
Sales are down in Japan and that indeed is a fact, Wii Sports isn't bundled in Japan and was the attach rate japanese, NA, Europe, WW and did it base itself in shipment numbers or actual sales to consumer.

@NJ5

I pointed out the same thing earlier but I guess he likes your table better! :P

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Some serious sensationalism going on in this article.

1). The PS3 did not "eclipse" the Wii in sales - the gap wasn't enormous by any definition of the word in March.

2). Generalizing the entire world based on Japan is not a very smart thing to do. The Japanese market has been declining while everyone else has been growing.

Journalists are just generally too quick to call doom-and-gloom for the Wii whenever sales slumps occur.
