Either he's lying, which makes him a ridiculous person, or he's telling the truth and they're getting vastly outperformed by smaller teams that then work a lot more efficiently.

So either they're liars or they're unefficient.

I think you made a very good point. Praising the size of you team does not say much for its effectiveness, if sales are lagging with respect to competing teams.

What a weird thing to brag about too? Its like bragging about having the highest inventory, or the highest development costs.

really you have to ask your self

would you like to have a 8 foot tall giant give you five bucks...or a three foot midget give you a hundred?

yeah ....

I know most people those days don't belive in logical thinking but seriously it's pretty obvious that they are bragging that they can  and will release more first/second party games then competitors.

Let's consider two facts.

1. Sony planned on loss-leading this gen as they have with previous generations, meaning they planned on selling the hardware at a loss and making the money back on software.

2. Most money is made from first party software.

With those facts, is it surprising to that Sony has the largest internal games development studio? If they didn't, how in hell were they planning on making their money back?

Their former plans are kind of irrelevant now, since things didn't go as planned (they had to cut prices faster than they expected).

Surely they need first party studios to be profitable, but they still seem to have too many. Look out for downsizing and more studios merging in the next few months and perhaps years.

Well of course it didn't go according to plan but it stands to reason that many of those studios have been in place since the the PS3 was launched with the purpose of producing software that would propel the Playstation to the generation lead. Afterall it worked twice before

While i agree that there may come a time that Sony will be forced to trim some of the fat i don't think Sony can turn around and start operating their studios like Nintendo, nor do i think they should. They have to stick with what they are good at. Given that this is their best chance to make back their money i think downsizing their studios will be a last resort.

I agree with your first paragraph, not so much with the second. Operating their studios like Nintendo will probably not happen (not soon at least), but I think we should expect some fairly significant changes given Sony's declarations on the gaming division's restructuring.

Since this is coming from the horses mouth I'll assume it is true.

1. Are these studios a drain or are they profiting. I'll assume the former unless corrected with strong evidence because if they have that many employees its got to be a massive drain on their resources if every single HD publisher is losing money pretty much even with some impressive blockbuster releases I have to assume that Sony is as well at this point.

2. Is their pursuit of development excellence causing them to hire huge quantities of staff at the expense of profits. Guerilla games had in excess of 200 staff at points in Killzone 2 development and I heard that Santa Monica had two animators for every programmer and thats a lot of staff and expensive MOCAP.

I just checked and the Wii and PS3 have the same number of titles published by Nintendo/Sony (43 according to VGC). If this is accurate, the number of developers Sony has isn't translating to a quantity of PS3 games.

I get your point, but when you have the biggest team and you're well into the third year of your life cycle, you should not be bragging about what you are capable of, you should be bragging about what you have already brought.

" Noone said they dont have quality. But they are not the holy grail of gaming. "

Neither are MGS4 or LBP or Halo 3, but many woulddisagree with me.

And I love how this thread pretty much turned into a fanboy war XD

And imo Sony's 1st party aren't that great, I prefer their 3rd party.

Im starting to like John Koller, he reminds me of Aaron Greenberg.
