Forums - General - "Evolution is a LIE!!!" - Presenting the Stereotype

Richard Dawkins himself says that you can't be a scientist and say that anything is 100% fact. I agree with this. You can't tell somebody that god doesn't exist, and that evolution is a fact 100%, and then tell them they're closed minded for not taking the evidence into consideration.

I'm an athiest, and an evolutionist, but that being said, you can never be 100% sure of anything.

Don't be so open minded that you shut out other possibilities that don't make sense to you. :)

@Highway:

It should be noted that you describe the positivist form of research. The Linguistic form doesn't even go so far as to state that theory is considered true in scienftific communities as the linguistic followers believe that every idea is suscept to your worldview and the people you are researching.

still, your absolutely right

You don't "believe" in evolution. Its not a religion or something like Santa Claus. Scientists don't go home and worship evolution after work.

Err.. No.. Of course not...

*Hides shrine to Darwin*

Darwin was disproved years ago. What's the big fuss?

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

Hmmm, I am 100% sure that I have red hair.
I am 100% sure that it is sunnier out when it isn't raining. I'm also 100% sure that baking soda reacts violently with vinegar. I'm 100% sure that there are no 37 legged creatures on Earth.

I agree with your post in general (though I think you meant close-minded), and I see the rhetorical point that Richard Dawkins was trying to make (and generally it is true), but it is ultimately just that: rhetorical. Most of the things that we cannot be sure are "100% fact" would be considered 99.999999999% fact, if you could quantify something's truthfulness that precisely.

Well then take it up with Dawkins. :)

I'm sure that you're smarter than him.

It's basically a concession on Dawkin's part. I mean there's that one book of his where he basically just expounds on how there's basically no way that there's a higher power, that faith is bullshit and all that. If something appears to be as true as evolution, it is; Dawkins is just pointing out that nothing can be absolutely proven, not that nothing is absolutely true.

Nah, btw, I meant open.

I don't know how many people I've ran into that take an "open minded" stance on everything, and reject every other viewpoint.

It's self defeating.
