Forums - Sales - Snow White to get Blu-Ray Release 7 Weeks Before DVD

Technically, this isn't the first time this has happened.  But this is the largest gap between the two releases and is the biggest name title for which this has happened.  I think this is a sign of what we will see more often in the future.  And if you think this is some kind of corporate marketing tactic, you are right, but remember that this happened with DVD and VHS too.

Disney Hi-Hos ‘Snow White’ Blu-ray Seven Weeks before DVD

Fri Apr 03, 2009 at 02:00 PM ET

Disney/Buena Vista has announced that they will release the animated classic 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' on Blu-ray seven weeks before the standard DVD this Fall.

On October 6, the Blu-ray edition of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ will be released, while the standard DVD will follow seven weeks later on November 24. Those who don’t own a Blu-ray player can still purchase the high-definition version, though, which will also include a DVD of the film.

There's no word on list price, tech specs or extras as of yet, but expect all-new features exclusive to this release.

You can find the latest specs for 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where it's indexed under October 6.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. This is probably the best way to push the Blu-ray format........or kill DVD sales.

Is Sora, Rikku, and Kairi in this??

If I'm not mistaken, the only one to do this so far has been Disney. They have been with the Blu-ray group since the beginning so I guess you could say it was kinda expected. I'm starting to wonder how long before other major backers of Blu-ray start doing this.

This must have already been released on DVD a long time ago. Isn't this one of those cases where they lock it in the "vault" then bring it back out?

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Of course not, they're never in the disney worlds. Sora, Donald and Goofy (in that order) is in it.

Yeah, but they usually totally phase out the print run.  It isn't usually available for several years at retail until they release the new version.

To many people this is more valuable than a new theatrical release movie.

No, but they'll all be on blu-ray soon enough.

jk Soriku.

It begins...

Or has this happened before?

Anywho, I and others have said for awhile that this will be the reason Blu-Ray eventually takes over. Planned obsolescence. Studios will start prioritizing Blu-Ray releases over DVD, and as the prices of Blu-Ray player components come down, manufacturers will eventually phase out the remaining DVD player skus in favor of just producing 2-3 models of Blu-Ray players per company. Since Blu-Ray players play DVDs (and make 'em look better to boot), this will be no problem for consumers that need to buy a replacement player, provided the price is right.
