Forums - Sony - Should I get a psp?

dystopia said:

if you have an old psp (firmware 1.0 or 1.5) you dont need custom firmware to play any pirated games, however yes if most of the time homebrew is used to pirate games, and i can understand why some are against that. homebrew does have some other uses though, not all of it goes towards pirating.

Oh, I know homebrew's not all bad - people use it for interesting things all the time, like hacking Brawl to make it more like Melee (apparently). I was just saying that in Esa-Petteri's case it is pretty clearly going to be used for piracy, especially given his track record with the DS.

Do not post info on how to pirate games.  This even includes links to game images and how to get them.

Why do you make it sound like there is something wrong with running homebrew?

I don't think that anyone is saying that homebrew itself is a negative - I'm sure it can be used for all kinds of fun, legitimate reasons.

But you pretty clearly use it in the interest of piracy, which would be the problem.

How do you use homebrew for piracy?

I'unno. I assumed it had something to do with this:

the psp homebrew scene is pretty awesome, and while the library of psp games might not be the strongest on it's own, when you add in the ps1, snes, genesis, and gameboy libraries you can't really do better with a handheld system.
Did I misinterpret that, and it's possible to pirate the games of those latter systems without custom firmware?

Homebrew is homemade software, which is totally legal. Don't know what you are referring to. :P

well, i myself have no problem with that.

I don't know, I am not interested in retro games. PS1 games are another thing, I am not sure but I think you can run them from your memory card if you take an image of your cd:s. That is not piracy..

Strictly speaking, that isn't true; the EULA for games you buy does not include you being legally allowed to copy images from those games, even as a backup. So, yes, technically anything like that is piracy.

Unless I have the wrong idea entirely.

Too bad that those EULA:s don't matter/they matter only in USA. Where I live it is perfectly legal to make a backup copy of your game.

edit:

Dude, what do you know about my track record with ds? Stop insulting me, now.

You live in the UK, yeah? You can find the EULA for the entire European Union in the back of any instruction manual under copyright information.

As to your edit:

That's not an insult, it's an observation. I don't believe for a moment that you spent over two grand on DS games whereby you could add them to your "current" collection.

No, I live in Finland and I know a bit of local law. EULA is not valid at least in Finland. Out of curiosity, do you have a moral problem with using an image of a game you own?

That is an insult, I don't care what you believe.

Ah, I see the point of confusion. EULA isn't referring to any specific law, it's short for End User License Agreement - by purchasing or using that software, you implicitly agree to use that software in a way in keeping with the laws for your region. Yes, you do operate under an EULA, regardless of where you're from - the laws will just differ from place to place.

Also I'm not sure but you may be confused as to the meaning of "insult". I'm not calling you a pirate - I am merely saying that the number of DS games in your "collection" is at best at odds both with a reasonable expectation of someone's spending habits and with your own professed interest in the system.

You don't get it. :) There has been some cases where EULA:s have been declared invalid where I live. There is a thing called "fair use" of your copy of digital media. It does not matter what they print in EULA, local law outweighs it.

I have a psp and I love it for it's other features as well as it's awesome games catalog.

1) movie playback - I travel alot and the fact I can download movies from psn for rent or to own makes my trips so much better.

2) MP3 playback-nothing like having an all in one, I have a nano and sometimes it is cool to have music, movies, and games in one device.

3) Games- the one thing my nano does not do better,3rd gaming at it's finest. I am a rpg fanatic and I play all the the final fantasy games (1,2, crisis core) and also I have like 7 downloadable games like flow, everyday shooter, and recently italian and japanese translators that make traveling very interesting.

It is a all around better package (IMOB) than the DS for me.
