Forums - Gaming - Who has made the greatest contribution to games this decade and why?

Wow. I am very impressed at the effort put into some of these replies.

@Onyxmeth You rule! :)

Me. The consumer. Without us, there would be no gaming industry.

As an individual it must be Todd Howard, producer and director at Bethesda on games like Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Nintendo. They made:
- old people enjoy video games and sees it as something positive while fun, and not something that corrupts youngs mind and time consuming
- parents/fat/lazy people feel that the Wii is the answer to getting their kids/themselves to be more 'active'

lets face it, PS3 & Xbox360 are just continuations from their previous gens that makes oldies hate video games, and making more people fat & lazy.

The first half is the PS2 and the second half is Nintendo

and BTW what the hell did Sega do in the last 9 years aside from droping the Dreamcast and Milking Sonic besides some good games (Total War comes to mind which is great) but by far not a MAJOR contribution

I agree with this. What becomes the more important influence long term is yet to be seen (i.e, will the PS2 or Wii have a more lasting impact). I suspect the answer is the Wii -- the Wii has certainly rocked the foundations of the industry harder than the PS2 -- but I can certainly imagine a future where the PS2-style approach resumes domination.

Sony, They made the PLAYSTATION

...in 1994. It's now 2009. So the decade the OP is referring to would be 2000-2009 which would leave 1994 a bit out of that area wouldn't you say?

Ahhh hahhaha i lost 10 years somewhere. My bad

for 2000-2009 then : Its Sony with PS2, PS3 (super 1st 2nd 3rd party support, multiple amazing francises), Sega with online on Dreamcast (but that was 1998) & Nintendo with the motion controls for the Wii

Sorry but Microsoft did absolutetly nothing, its all about copy/paste for them

Couldn't agree more

The Virtual Console, finding hidden gems from all throughout gaming history and keeping them alive. I think this is the most important contribution to gaming this decade.

Shouldn't Microsoft at least be given partial credit considering Xbox live Arcade does the same thing to a lesser extent and did come first?

Yeah.

But, they make them all ugly and "upgraded" and add achievements and shit that wasn't in the originals.  And they're limited to arcade games.  And now they only have 198 games, while VC has 294 in America (and 434 in Japan, lucky bastards).  I think the VC is more efficiently organized and a more successful historical archive.

But yeah, you're right.  I just don't think archiving old games was an original idea for either of them (I've been doing it forever), so in this instance I don't care who came first, and think the execution is more important.

Sony, Nintendo, Blizzard.

PS2, DS, Wii, WoW - the systems and the game with the most impact.

Copy and paste huh.

Afterall, thats all they have done for the last 15 years.
