Forums - Gaming - If you had to show somebody what is great about gaming with only 5 games...

What would they be?

Say it's somebody who's never gamed before, but has agreed to play 5 games of your choice to see what all the hullabaloo is about. Granted it's an impossible task but...what 5 would you choose...and would you impose an order? Keep in mind this is a gaming skeptic, so he's not gonna get blown away by stuff like Halo online. And we'll assume he's casually acquainted with classic arcade games (i.e. Pacman) and their ilk, simply because of their broad cultural dissemination.

I'd do this:

Legend of Zelda (NES): Give him a good grasp of how awesome old school 8-bit games were at their best

LoZ: Ocarina of Time: Build on his preestablished knowledge of the series and show him how games changed as they made the leap into 3D

Final Fantasy 6: Show him the best game of one of the best franchises and get him acquainted with RPG's at the same time. Timeless storytelling and gameplay that isn't that hard to learn bolster the neccesity of this one.

Half Life 2: You gotta have at least one shooter on the list, and what better one then what is still widely considered on of the best story driven FPS out there.

Starcraft: Show him what the term "timeless gameplay" is all about. For an early gamer (at least in my experience) there aren't many experiences as mindblowing as the first time you immerse yourself in the universe of Starcraft

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

I wouldn't show them old games, that's for sure...

Ya gotta build up a foundation. It's like building up an appreciation for cinema; you don't start with Transformers or something like that. You go back to old black and white silent films then move on up. Same with literature.

I agree with Okey Dokey; unless the person your showing is really patient and is dedicated to wanting to know how far games have come, I'd give them the very best of the time first and foremost to really get them interested =/

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

Commander Keen 4
Wolfenstein 3D
Final Fantasy 7
Civilization 2
Mariokart 64

Not sure...

LittleBigPlanet and Burnout Paradise are the only 2 I can think of right now.

4 ≈ One

I'd start with a lilbita

LoZ:LttP to get him into basics, show that games can be like an "interactive story"

then (s)he would move onto

LoZ:OoT for the whole 3-D experience

now for some RTS I'd give him/her

Warcraft 3, to impress him with some visuals and "zombify" him/her a bit

now that his/her intrest is peaked I would give her a FPS

Metroid Prime 1 to get him/her to like shooting "things" (and story again)

now to be safe with Wii and Mario I'd give him/her

SMG to quench his/her thirst!

hope it would work...
