What would they be?
Say it's somebody who's never gamed before, but has agreed to play 5 games of your choice to see what all the hullabaloo is about. Granted it's an impossible task but...what 5 would you choose...and would you impose an order? Keep in mind this is a gaming skeptic, so he's not gonna get blown away by stuff like Halo online. And we'll assume he's casually acquainted with classic arcade games (i.e. Pacman) and their ilk, simply because of their broad cultural dissemination.
I'd do this:
Legend of Zelda (NES): Give him a good grasp of how awesome old school 8-bit games were at their best
LoZ: Ocarina of Time: Build on his preestablished knowledge of the series and show him how games changed as they made the leap into 3D
Final Fantasy 6: Show him the best game of one of the best franchises and get him acquainted with RPG's at the same time. Timeless storytelling and gameplay that isn't that hard to learn bolster the neccesity of this one.
Half Life 2: You gotta have at least one shooter on the list, and what better one then what is still widely considered on of the best story driven FPS out there.
Starcraft: Show him what the term "timeless gameplay" is all about. For an early gamer (at least in my experience) there aren't many experiences as mindblowing as the first time you immerse yourself in the universe of Starcraft
