Well, for one, those of us that aren't in school/college anymore don't care about references.

Besides that, Wikipedia is earning respect and acceptance among schools nowadays. And even if it's not, you can just use the sources that Wikipedia cites and still reach the same verdict.

It makes sense. People are flooded with information on anything and everything everywhere they go so there's no need to waste money on one of the only sources that isn't free to the consumers.
