Microsoft dismisses PlayStation 2 price cut

Microsoft has shrugged off any suggestions of increased competition from Sony after it announced a price cut today for the nine year-old PlayStation 2 console.

Sony has dropped the price of the console stalwart to EUR 99 and USD 99 in North America, with SCEA's Jack Tretton suggesting the move "will bring in new consumers who will discover how PlayStation platforms are an outstanding choice for their gaming and home entertainment needs."

However, Microsoft dismissed the price cut, stating that the future is about the growth of current generation consoles, not older technology.

"This move from Sony at the end of the PS2’s life cycle is not unexpected," Chris Lewis, VP of the Interactive Entertainment Business for Microsoft, told GamesIndustry.biz.

"We believe, however, that the future lies in the growth of current generation consoles and Xbox 360, as the fastest growing games console last year, with sales up over 80 per cent, will continue to drive the market.

"Xbox 360 has clearly demonstrated that the combination of the right price, blockbuster games as well as the market-leading broad connected entertainment content available through Xbox Live will continue to resonate with the ever growing needs of today’s consumers," added Lewis.

Good to know they're not threatened by the PS2, I suppose. Their lack of fear makes sense!

PR talk is always so amusing, though.

Maybe I am reading this wrong, but did he just say that the 360 is what is driving the market?

Was the Wii ignored again?

It makes sense... MS has nothing to fear here. Ps2 is not ps3 and if PS3 doesn't hurry with a price cut as well, 360 will have the pro unit at 199 by the time PS3 is at 299.

In todays economy, seems like cash is king. Not to mention very similar experience for less money...

If you ignore the elephant in the room, it might go away.

Alright, just wanted to be sure that they think the Wii isn't current gen.

If they put the word "HD" before market will most of you nitpickers be happy?

This isn't nitpicking. They directly compared the 360's growth rate to that of every other console and then pretended that this served as justification for saying they drive the market.

Again, this isn't nitpicking, this is pointing at laughing at the spin on these numbers.

Sony and MS both have been ignoring the Wii this entire generation, so PR like this should be a shock to anyone.

Sony dropping the price of PS2 is to help clear large stockpiles that have recently accumulated over the last few quarters. I think this a good move for Sony.

The PS2 is a great console with an amazing library so continuing to sell PS2 hardware will only benefit Sony in the long run. Considering that they do not plan on bringing BC to the PS3 this move is not surprising.

The 360 is selling extremely well so a PR response like this is expected. What do people expect them to say?
