Now, I am not convinced one way or the other on global warming (sorry, I'm not going to now call it "climate change" since the climate has always changed), but this is definitely something to consider and think about.

The changes were discussed very thoroughly in a paper in 2001:

They are due mostly to: corrections from NOAA related to time of observation bias, homogeneity adjustments to the records (to account for station moves etc.) and improvements to the urban heat island corrections.
Nothing underhanded going on at all.
