Forums - Gaming - The Common Misconceptions Thread

I see a lot of misconceptions on this website being thrown around as fact.  So I decided I would make a thread about these misconceptions to bring them out in the open and debunk them.

I would like everybody to share some common (or just hiliarious) misconceptions they have heard on this site and then follow it up with what is actually true.

I will go ahead and start it off.

The first misconception I would like to debunk is that Sony is the sole owner of the Blu Ray format.  Blu Ray was actually co developed by sony and Pioneer and is currently owned and operated by about 18 different companies.  Companies like Apple, Samsung, Mitsubishi, etc.  The Royalties from disc sells get spread pretty wide with tons of different companies getting a piece of the pie.  In fact, even Microsoft gets some royalties from blu ray sales as it uses one of the codecs that Microsoft developed.

So there ya go, lets see what else we can debunk on here eh?

When a company says they sold a certain amount of copies of a game, it means sold to retailer (shipped).

Yay!

Access to the internet and being able to read from a Wikipedia page does not make one an expert on a given topic.

Statistically speaking, the area in which you live is probably not representative of normative trends in terms of console buying for the larger public.

The excitement and hype towards a game on the internet is not always mirrored in the general gaming populace.

Ratings are someone's opinion, and not a fact (usually....).

First day/week/month sales don't always give an accurate indication of what a games total sales will be.

"Now, a fun game should always be easy to understand - you should be able to take one look at it and know what you have to do straight away. It should be so well constructed that you can tell at a glance what your goal is and, even if you don’t succeed, you’ll blame yourself rather than the game. Moreover, the people standing around watching the game have also got to be able to enjoy it." - Shiggy

Hardcore and core don't mean the same thing.

The opposite of hardcore isn't 'casual', it is 'normal'.

I'll continue this one.

Ratings are someones opinion and should only be used to judge buying a game and not be used to judge other games by.  Example game X is better than game Y because it was scored .1 higher on IGN.
