Forums - Gaming - Australian Retail Update (Toys R US) - Mega PS3 deal!

Well - I just got home after a session at the gym, to find the latest Toys R Us catalog on the table. It has some interesting tidbits in it - thought that would interest a lot of people here:

1/ Neither the PS2, 360 or Wii have any advertising. Its a pretty small catalog, and its possible that both these consoles are doing well enough - or are just out of stock. Or it could be something else.

2/ There is a "sort-of" amazing PS3 deal available. Please remember that the PS3 was launched here no more than 6 months ago. That launch had the console + nothing --> $999AU:

PS3 Virtu Fighter 5 Pack

 - PS3 console (probably the 60Gig, I think its the only one we get)
 - Arcade stick
 - VF5 + Motorstorm + Resistance (!!!)
 - bonus controller (so it comes with 2)
 - 5 x $5 off coupons

...for $1079. At launch prices, this would have cost close to $1500AU!!

Sony seem determined to offer MORE for the same price - rather than drop the price. Its still extremely expensive IMO.

To top this off, previously expensive PS3 titles - like Oblivion - are selling for just $70AU(!!). Would have launched for $119 I think. Clearance sale??

3/ PSP Slim pack:

PSP Slim + game + coupons --> $299

Pretty good price considering a normal PSP is around $300AU.

4/ DS Lite (pink) + game for $209AU (normal price)

Lots of DS games for $39AU, including some good ones.

5 x $5 off coupons? Haha I got 10 X $10 off coupons when I bought my PS3

I also have a Target catalog:

Only the Wii & 360 are in the catalog. Although games for all platforms - except the PS3 - are advertised. Halo also gets a nice banner ad at the bottom of the page:

Wii: $399 - Wii console + game (Monkey Ball)

360: $449 - 360 (core) + memory card + 4 games (!) - Kameo, PGR, Viva Pinata, Fuzion Frenzy II

Bunch of DS games - $44 (advertised to be 35% off)

Wii games - $59..$75 (excellent price for Oz!).

PS2 games $19AU (NFS, Bratz, etc..), $29 (Cars, Crash, Cricket...).

All dollars AU dollars as usual (currently around 80c US).

What are 5 5 dollar off coupons?

Like 5 dollars off the next 5 games you buy? 5 dollars off the next 5 times you purchase stuff at Toys R Us?

I'm guessing they don't stack?

5 coupons that reduce the price of 5 game by $5

No they don't stack. Only one per purchase.

Seems like every console is adding games to their deals but keeping the prices the same.

I laugh at the 360 core pack!!! what four games??? And a memory card for just $50 more then the Wii??? And to still see it not selling well is a real shame! I suppose everyone knows the core is crap anyway and no deal will sell the damn thing in mass quantity.

Now the Pro pack at this price will fly off the shelves!

It's me...  no really, it IS me!!!

All the consoles are expensive here. $450 or $400 are both a lot.

This is the first time I have seen the 360 so cheap - even if it is only the Core version. It may do really well, with Halo not that far around the corner.

...

If I had more time to play games, I would consider that 360 pack. I'll still rather get one for $299 (preferably a Premium) with nothing else. Friends I can borrow games from.

Its WiiSports that is selling the Wii - and MP8. Lots of Wii advertising, 360 has basically none.

Don't buy this! If you must have a PS3 this side of when the actual decent games come out (mid-2008), get the JB Hi-fi starter pack for $959, and then purchase VF5 for $80-90. Its $30-40 cheaper for the same stuff, less the $5 dollar coupons (what else would you purchase at Toys'r'Us i ask you? Especially seeing as they will no doubt have a one coupon per purchase condition.

Also, EB recently ended a sale where Oblivion and other hit 360 titles such as Gears of War were sold for $50

The core package there is pretty good, Kmart are selling the core console with PGR3 for $399, which is officially $1 cheaper than ther RRP for the Wii in  Australia.
