Every console war is about initial landgrab. Once your console is established as number one you sit back and reap the rewards.
Last gen SEGA went for an initial landgrab but it failed when the better specced and better supported PS2 launched. GC and XBox were too late to the party. They were left fighting over the scraps.
This gen Microsoft went all out for the landgrab and its only part worked. Ironically a lesser powered odd console in the Wii has stolen its thunder.
Sony are doing relatively well for such a high pricepoint and tardy launch.
However last gen some 200 million people enjoyed console ownership.
This gen 100 million have already committed to a brand some two brands.
In summary this gen is half way through and the PS3 is in last place.
I do not deny that the PS3 is starting to pick up its feet and gain a little ground but time is running out. There are only so many consumers to win and they get harder to find day by day.
There are no prizes in a horse race for finishing strongly if the race is over before you get into the home straight.
I hope I got my point across. Basically the price cut may not be essential but if Sony want to maintain good third party ties and industry presence it is a prudent move.

I agree with you really. But like Sony keep saying they are concerned with profit, and a price cut now isn't going to sell that many machines really in the grand scheme of things and towards chrimbo when sales really pick up the effect of drop will have lost some "kerpow" lol.
So they might as well just hold out till september, sell what they are now, which is pretty good, make a nice profit. Then crash bang wallop in september when they've reduced manufacturing costs further and it will have a much bigger effect given the increased sales around september-december...
In all honesty I think that they'd actually LOSE market share in the long term by having a price cut at this time of year...
Sure sales would be up massively now...but massively compared to what? mid year sales pale into insignificane compared to september-december...
Oh and I know you weren't being rude by saying I've missed the point ;) but I do get it...I just think this generation and most likely all from now on can't be judged like previous ones where gaming was a niche market occupied by relativately small companies...The ps "bran" is still alive to some degree in terms of people would by a sony machine over an ms machine if bother were equal except the name including price. (even I have been brainwashed to some degree and I can't stand sony's way of doing things).
This appearl can easily last another 6 months although it does diminish and is a shadow of what it was, "Playstation" is still the biggest name in gaming - I only mean the name. So the "land grab" at the start of the generation isn't really that important...
I dunno lol....just curious, didn't mean to start another "sony should price cut now!!!" threads :)
