Forums - Gaming - Why has the Turn-Based JRPG Died? -- Are FF12 & KH to blame?

Turn-based JRPG's are my favorite RPG's..I hate where the genre is going now=/ Don't get me wrong, I like games like Star Ocean and Secret of Mana (old example), but most recent JRPG's are just missing that little something the turn-based ones had=/

It is turn based.

since the merge of Squaresoft and Enix, they've been slightly changing the battle system in FF series. but i don't think it has died, I just think there's a lack of JRPG's just gen for us to make a conclusion.

I think by turn based most of us mean that you stay in place on one side and the enemy on the other and you get a menu or something like any other FF like FF VIII or X or whatever...

I don't like FF XII's combat because of this :3 If they want to go real time, make it like KH please. Or more like FFCC: TCB from what we've seen of it. IMO FF XIII's combat doesn't look that bad but I'd like normal turn based back. Now that I think of it it kinda reminds me of VP which isn't a bad thing really, but for FF I like normal turn based.

That's fine and dandy, but in that case, turnbased is the wrong word to be using to describe why you don't like FF XII. Not moving and enemies and allies taking a side of the screen does not constitute turnbased gameplay. Turnbased gameplay has to do with there being a turn for you to make actions and a turn for your enemies and that type of gaming has been diluted far far before FF XII came to market, and it's been diluted ever since active time battles way back in the heyday.

BTW, you do get menus in FF XII. You also get to pause the action during menu choices. Your actions only go through after a timed bar reaches the end, and you cannot have another action until it does. People confuse your ability to walk in battle, there being no seperate battle screen and the fact that the turnbased gameplay is individually based as opposed to team based as a sign that this is not turnbased gameplay. It is however. It's just a different way of approaching it, and even though many people think it failed, I applaud Square for still trying to keep it fresh gameplay wise and not rest on their laurels.

Well, that normal turn based I'm talking about has been around for so long. I guess it's just a normal term for us now.

Btw, they didn't really need to go semi-real time to make it fresh. They could've left it normally but added new twists. Like the Baten Kaitos series. That has the most innovative turn based combat ever.

I know how long turnbased combat has been around. However I don't get why the dividing line is FF XII and not earlier like FFX or FFIV when each introduced elements that furthered themselves from the uber traditional turnbased combat of the original Final Fantasy.

Baten Kaitos is card based. That sounds far more out of the realm of traditional turnbased combat than a faux real time combat does because you are playing a glorified card game like Yugioh. Don't you build a deck, and play random cards from that deck? That's a card game.

Call it what is then. You'd rather your turn based games restrict you.

I am torn—I loved the combat in Parasite eve, but the classic turn based like bof 3, ff7, and such is just so great and requires tons of strat to be good at

People don't want them anymore.

Look at their silly reactions towards Arc Rise Fantasia.

It is all about WRPGs now; in all their boring glory.

Baten Kaitos isn't a card game. The "cards" are more as commands than anything. It's not like you summon anything like Yugioh. That's probably a reason why it didn't sell too well, many people probably avoided it because of that (and why I avoided it for a while). If you played the game you'd know it's different.

@outlaw

I don't consider it restricting...

Don't the choice cards from your deck pop up at random? Don't you build a deck prior to combat? That is a card game my friend. Excuse me for using Yugioh as an example. Magic the Gathering, Marvel Trading Card Game, Capcom vs. SNK Card Fighters. Do those work any better for you?

That is a turnbased system of combat but it is nothing remotely like the menubased system of choosing attacks based on your total inventory like most turnbased systems have, including FF XII. Baten Kaitos is far more removed from traditional RPG mechanics than FF XII is.
