Most of the RPG's I've enjoyed have been like that, Tales of Symphonia being the exception. Admittedly I haven't played too many, and most are western, but The World Ends with You is a perfect example of a JRPG that does it right.

Emil has to be the worst lead character in RPG history. That's including Cloud Strife, and you all know how I despise Cloud.

Agreed/ Secret of Mana is a perfect example of RPGs that throw you right into the action
Actually, the game doesn't get much better with time. Emil is still annoying as hell until the end of the game. The pokemon monster catching thing is retarded. The plot is also rather ridiculous and has little to do with that of the original game. I think it a worse spinoff than FFX-2 was.
How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

It's a shame that people only start hating on some games months after release, when i bought it everybody was talking how great it is and how Daemon on IGN was an idiot for giving the game a 6.7 (Good thing i only expected this game to be ok)
I just started the game last night. I didn't find it to be nearly that bad. I'm only an hour and a half in and I'm really diggin' it. Can't wait to play more when I get off of work.

collete may have been anoying, but she pales in comparison to Emil. Also, you don't have to deal with Collete throughout the entire game, unlike Emil who you can't get rid of

Daemon's review of the game was joke. He complained about staples of the JRPG genre in the review. Any review that complains about the basic features of genre is made of fail.
