CoD4 is anything but generic. Do you know how many future games will be based off of it because it was so evolutionary?

Its sequels like World at War that piss me off, same game different time period. It brought nothing new to the series.

No,Games might be based off the ENGINE thats it,and only Infityward and treyarch games.

What makes it not generic?

CoD and other shoots are no more than First Person Rail Shooters to me.

L4D FTW!

You should play S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Ah, now that's a gem of a title IMHO.  Bugs scuppered it but patched and played as intended it was superb.  Good FPS with a great setting and a real good use of different mechanics.

I'd love to see more titles take its approach to a persistant world you operate in.  I understand Far Cry 2 is a bit like that so I must get around to it at some point.

Ahh yeah, persistent is another key word for interesting games IMO, in addition to sandbox/open world.

Persistent open world shooters and RPGs rule. Far Cry 2 is a good example, I love that game. And in the RPG genre it's Oblivion of course.

The shooters market will eventually be replaced by another. That's the circle of gaming life.

Generic shooters are still more fun than generic jrpgs imo.

Not a 360 fanboy, just a PS3 fanboy hater that likes putting them in their place ^.^

All 1st person shooters are the same, but some do stand out from the crowd.  For me games have to have a story and a sense of purpose to them.

Call of duty games don't have any.  Just shoot your way to the next part.

PC gaming rules.....

Guess I really will have to give Far Cry 2 a go then for sure - it's pretty cheap already as well so no reason not to.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Call of Duty 1 until now have been sporting the same theme, with the same weapons, the same enemies, and the same style.

4 may have changed the gameplay dramatically, but it still doesn't escape the generic overall performance of the game. They simply took the same game and adjusted the controls.

I applaud games like Bioshock and Resistance 2, which employ a deep and engaging storyline with creative weapons and enemies. At least they put some creativity in the game.

CoD1's expansion plays completely different than CoD4/5. The maps are massive and there's jeeps to get around. The tanks arn't overpowered like in CoD5 but some servers have them disabled anyways. It's definitely not a run'n'gun shooter like 4/5 either - both teams are set on opposite sides of a large map so it's not a giant spawn-kill battle. There's adjustments to player health/weapon recoil and those two things alone encourage more burst fire and less spray'n'pray. The bolt-action guns are actually used often by some of the good players online, compared to CoD5 where they're only used to abuse the overpowered rifle grenade.

The entire CoD series is viewed as a generic braindead shoooter by some. It was at it's best when it was a PC-only game. When it made it's way to 360 with CoD2, that's when it became the braindead shooter that it is today. Still dissapoints me =/

Whether R2 can be considered generic or not is questionable. I personally felt the SP was really weak. There's barely any large-scale battles in the game. Hardly anything impressive happens. Too much lone fighting and the guns feel far from creative - the 2 main basic weapons are an automatic rifle and another random laser gun. The carbine actually feels horrible.....feels like it has absolutely no weight, especially considering that it has no recoil at all.

The only thing that's new about it is the objective-based multiplayer, which I think could've been tons better, but it's a start. As for it's 60+ player matches, it's only new to consoles. I also don't like chasing after beacons all the damn time. That seriously wasn't what I expected when I was reading about the Skirmish mode.

You shouldn't complain about generic shooters if you haven't got a taste of the good ones on PC. Battlefield is another awesome series that also got raped when it was put on consoles. BF2142 was easily my favorite for it's Titan mode, where the objective was to destroy the other team's captial ship. Though it felt like a low-budget game, Joint Opertions (forgot the subtitle name) was another fun one that supported 60+ players in a ridiculously huge jungle-setting. It had tons of vehicles to get around, along with a chopper so huge that it could fit smaller vehicles inside it.

If you're looking for non-generic shooters, expect to be dissapointed with the ones that are on consoles.

lets not bring PC into this lol, console FPS are like dumbed down versions with some gimmicks so it's not really fair to compare.

Well what generic things do you prefer? Final Fantasy? Online RPGs?
