Forums - Nintendo - Lets discuss why Ocarina of Time was great.

Fellow poster NanakiXI had this to say:

"it's Zelda... BUT 3D!!! The only game that made me get on my knees and almost cry out of shear joy when announced. Did I mention... IT"S ZELDA IN 3D!!! lol :P"

I could go all day with mine, but I'll keep it brief:

The music within the game was great, with many memorable themes.

At the time, the graphics were great as well, and the characters had facial expressions (pretty rare in the late 90s).

The gameplay was top notch and the dungeons were puzzling.

The finale was worth the ENTIRE experience, and the boss battles beforehand were original and exciting.

Progression was never monotonous, so you never knew what was coming next.

The game was long too, so you definitely get your money's worth.

And in conclusion, It contained an expansive and vibrant world, one that I will always regard as one of (if not the) best.

The game was just perfect for me.

OoT had some pretty nifty tunes and a good mood all over.
"The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" had better dungeons/temples (and gameplay imo).

Still, Ocarina is by all means a good game.

Because it's Zelda.

It was the atmosphere of the game. It oozed mystery and scope. The music helped in this way.

It was the innovations. The lock-on targeting system and the context sensitive A-button.

It was the mythos. While it had a simple overall story the world itself had TONs of backstory and legends and myths.

It was the details. Little things like signs on all of the blocks that corresponded to the sheikahs symbol. The fact that you could see the Forest Temple early in the game but couldn't get there until much later. The fact that the fishing game was a game within itself. The devil is in the details.

It was the characters. I haven't cared for characters so strongly in any game (except maybe Chrono Trigger). They were all characterized well and had unique personalities. Dialogue was almost NEVER boring.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

"The so-called "hardcore" gamer is a marketing brainwashed, innovation shunting, self-righteous idiot who pays videogame makers far too much money than what is delivered."

Ocarina of Time was great when it was released, but it got completely obliterated by Majora's Mask two years later.

That is one hell of an accomplishment considering that Majora's Mask plot only involves saving a princess as a side story.

Ew.  No way.   Majora's Mask was a pile of ass compared to OoT as far as I'm concerned.

The gameplay was great and the music was amazing.

TO GOD BE THE GLORY

 The owl says hi.

Pixel Art can be fun.

The OP said it all...

If it was released now, it still would be a very good game, but back when it was released it was just EPIC

PS: I loved Majoras Mask too... and I think it was underrated by the community

Yes many will argue 2D Zelda was better or its sequel on the n64 was better. Though there is no denying that Zelda: OoT laid the foundation for every 3D Zelda game there after. This is why I view this Zelda to be one of the greatest Zelda games and best 3D Zelda.

Sure you can say what you want about why this isn't the best but in all reality this is the highest ranking game of all time. A game doesn't get this honor if it isn't the best in the series and especially when it's considered the best out of every single videogame ever made. This game hasn't even aged one bit and is as fluid as the day I played it (Wished I could say that for many other gems out there). C'mon you know your first reaction was... "It's Zelda in 3D" XD FTW!

Link you have earned your princess... Now wear here!
