Why is E3 a competition and why does it matter who 'wins'?

Because competition is a way to strive for improvement instead of languishing in mediocrity.  Without a winner, there isn't really a competition.  If you think the world should never have a new game or console any other improvement related to gaming, then it doesn't matter.

And what if competition is a form of mediocrity?

Then it's time to have a revolution.  Wii says hi.

Nintendo's got the greatest possibility of dropping bombs, then Microsoft after them. We know Sony's arsenal right now, so it'll be harder for them to amaze (though Gran Turismo 5 + ICO 3 could really help)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

NO ! The Wii is . The "Motion control" Card is getting old , dont get me wrong Wii will continue to sell Great but its doomed to always lose E3 .

Wii didn't lose the E3 2006, in which the console was presented: it caught all the attention of the public, presented Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros Brawl and also were there Zelda Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime 3 Corruption, and some other minors games like Red Steel.

Of course, the rest of E3s for the Wii have been horrible, although after watching E3 2007 I thought there could be nothing worse, then the following year arrive E3 2008.......

Nintendo, fix your E3!

Again:

E3 2009 = Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all showing up with top hats on. Count on it, they will ALL impress and maybe even astound. And it will be a wonderful moment for the industry, because those of us that are being fair and impartial will be treated to 3 powerhouses pulling out all of the stops to entertain US.

Now comes the hard part. Waiting . . .

I completely forgot about E3 07...mainly because all I cared about was Brawl.

Nintendo this time I suppose. Sony has most of their important games already announced and I doubt MS will surpass its 2008 conference.

I expect a more interesting E3 this year.

Last year was odd because there was so much straw man fighting. Nintendo expected MS to push hard in the casual space and tried to outdo them, but as MS didn't Nintendo just looked weird and out on their own. MS throwing itshat into taking out Sony's exclusives when it wasn't clear that Sony was interested in playing that game ... and so on.

This year I expect some changes:

Nintendo, a bit more confident about their position, will better address their whole userbase - trad gamers included. But I still expect some off-the-wall surprises.

MS will probably play the money game with exclusives again and will also I suspect try to broaden their appeal, but I'm not at all sure how.

Sony will push hard for grabbing the innovation space for HD (the guaranteed royalties scheme won't hold blockbusters exclusive, but will bring in more fresher IP) - but it will probably be a bit early to announce most of it.

There won't be a clear 'winner' as they will all three be pointed in different directions.

Comparing them to drinks, MS wants to be beer, Sony wants to be champagne and Nintendo is a nice cup of tea.
