I'd prefer it if they seperated the franchises from now on. Leave CoD in Treyach's hands, and MW in Infinity Ward's.

It's complicated, nobody, not even Activision or Infinity Ward seems to be entirely sure what the hell is going on. I think it will still be Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 |
From a sales perspective you'd think they would want to brand it within the Call of Duty family, but on the other hand this may be a tactic to keep customers interested year after year as these two brands branch out further. People might be more willing to buy a branded FPS every two years as opposed to every one, even though they're at the moment basically the same game.
The call of duty series is like the madden of FPS.

No it's not. COD is not the only wartime first person shooter on the market. It has competition. Madden is a series devoid of any competition because of a licensing agreement EA has with the NFL.
They dropped the Call of Duty name officially. It will be known as "Modern Warfare 2". It was revealed to the press this morning.

Just an update.
It seems COD is coming to XBLA/PSN so anyone who has not played it can check it out.
I highly recommend trying it as it is good. Quite cruel as far as checkpoints are concerned but enjoyable.
Here is a link to the news.

I can't believe they would make another WW2 game... though I would probably still end up buying it, assuming you are meaning that CoD would stay WW2, and MW would be as the name implies. I agree about the idea of buying branded every other year, but the sales of WaW would seemingly go against that
Hell yeah it is.
Call of Duty still is the best online shooter for the 360 in my opinion.
