Forums - Gaming - What are the worst Clichés in WRPGs?

Demotruk said:
Those games, particularly Oblivion and Fallout, focus on mythos rather than story, as all open world games tend to(games that try otherwise will run into issues). Personally I think they have much stronger mythos' than any jrpg I've played, but I wouldn't claim that the weak mythos' of jrpg's are a cliché.

Since I don't want to single out JRPG's though, I'll give better examples of Western clichés in other genres. The big silent motherfucker protaganist who doesn't say much, but who's mates curse an unbelievable amount, that's a cliché. Excellent production values in everything but writing, that's a cliché (which I suppose is common in WRPG's too).

WRPGs can be split into two groups.  World games and story games.  World games are games lika Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Fable, etc. and story game is Mass Effect, any other BioWare game, and Planescape:Torment, etc.

World games-WRPGs that focus on open world exploration.

Story games-WRPGs that focus on story and character interactions.

True, and it goes beyond wrpg's. Grand Theft Auto, STALKER and X3: Reunion etc. fit under the same umbrella, and focus strongly on mythos but usually have a poor main plot.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Wow, most of the posters in this thread has absolutely no clue what a cliché is.

cliché - noun - anything that has become trite or commonplace through overuse.

Cliché is not a synonym for "something I don't like". Things like "bad storylines", "ugly characters", etc. are general complaints about quality; not clichés.

Here's a real cliché in WRPGs: bad guy discovers a lost, ancient magic/artifact/technology and uses it to try to take over the world/galaxy/universe. This pops up in other genres too though, including some JRPGs.

magic. magic always sucks in wrpg

If they're guiding you to your destiny, then they're not particularly useless.

That's one solid cliché.

Baldur's Gate/Forgotten Realms "Elminster" says hi, checking ur progress.

The big one is choose your own adventure, obviously. It seems pretty much every WRPG, to some degree, touts how much customization and choice they give users.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Well one of the obvious cliche in WRPGs is the fact that they all have horrible stories.

Some are still entertaining, but I'd never play one of them for an interesting story...

Baldur's Gate I, II, ToB

PlaneScape

Jade Empire

KOTOR I

Mass Effect
