Forums - Sony - GDC 09: God of War will not be locked at 60 FPS

Well, I don't know if it was 60, but its framerate surely jumped up a lot during some transition scenes. It was actually distracting, they should have locked it down.

It spiked up in some cases. I first noticed it in the building where you meet Meryl for the first time.

Actually. I did. You have to have keen eye, and look like a mad-man to find it though. But there are in fact a few areas in the game that would run at 60 fps. They are so few and far between that it is irrelavent though. Literally, they were just liitle spots in some of the levels. There were a few such anomalous spots in the level where you escape with the FROGS.

Nah, it wasn't so hard to spot them. Most inner environments on MGS4 are 60fps. The jumps are kinda annoying although.

Yeah, I thought it did at some parts actually... It's been too long since I played the game. I do remember when installing a new chapter (when Snake is smoking), the game ran at 60 fps easily.

Hmmm. I guess it'll give me another reason to play the game!

What I really meant is that the game didn't run at 60 fps from the start. It's more like 30 to 60, back to 40 to 50, etc. The framerate moves a lot in this game.

Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

You know what? You are totally right. I just haven't played it since June, so my memory needed to be jogged.

30FPS is perfectly enuff. 60FPS in a hacknslash is a waste of computation power that would better be used for beauful grafix.

How many of you understand the real difference between 30 fps and 60 fps?

60 fps is 16.67ms of processing time per frame.
30 fps is 33.33ms of processing time per frame.

Which one do you think will look higher quality, given the same engine technology? The one with 2x the framerate of a TV, or the one that uses 2x the horsepower to render an individual frame, and the same framerate as TV?

30fps means the game is doing a lot of cool stuff, or the engine was written poorly.  Given SCE's studios general quality level, I would say its the former, and not the latter.  Most people who think they can see the difference between "30 fps" and "60 fps" are actually noting the difference between "20 fps" and "30 fps" -- because, yes, accurately telling the difference between 30 and 60 is usually something only trained professionals can do without an on-screen counter, no matter how awesome you think your eyes are, relative to the rest of the human race.

A heck of a lot of games run at 20 fps, and people don't whine about it, although 30 fps is a clearly notable boost over 20.  60 fps is a minor benefit usually only afforded to games that are simplistic, in terms of rendering, like racers and space games, or PSN/XBLA grade titles.

Off the top of my head, the only games I can even think of, that run at 60 fps this gen, are some racers and little downloadable titles, which is exactly what I would suspect.  Anything else that runs at 60 is going to be called "last gen" by the reviewers, for its low-grade graphics.

This man is telling the perfect truth.

This is the reason why 30FPS is always prefered to (the waste of) 60FPS, except for past paced online shooters.
