Forums - Gaming - What are the worst cliches in JRPGs?

protagonists being incredibly young for as good as their abilities are. able to gain strength way too rapidly

Killing a rabbit or similar furry creature gives you moneys! WTF, why!?

It might be a little more trouble, but I always prefer if such enemies drop some trash loot that you then turn around and sell or use for crafting.

Girls are incredibly Hot ! Where do they find the time to do their hair?

Heck, I compiled an entire list, ages ago.

Though my all-time complaint for JPRGs in general is not on there: the extreme linearity of plot that inevitably permeates every single JRPG, even the ones that are ostensibly mission-based. I'm so sick of being railroaded in RPGs.

that's a great list!

the Turn-Waster Rule is not only true but extremely annoying

and one thing that I don't know if it's there: it's wonderful how you can eavesdrop with no problem at all and no one will care about it!

the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!

the villain is the main character father. the main character is the chosen one . you dont get the girl at the end. flyng evil headquarters. flyng evil island.

silent protaganists!!!!! THis just needs to DIE!!!!

Only 2 games in history were ever allowed to get away with this.
Chrono Trigger: becuase it was so old it cannot be faulted for it.
and
Persona 4: because the game was just that damn awesome.

Yet even with these two, they could have been better with voice acting.

Have you played the Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga games? Serph was an awesome silent protagonist. I think the devs like people to impose themselves on these characters. I'd rather have voices but this isn't a big issue for me.

My most annoying cliche: "teenagers saving the world"

Can we please have young adults? I guess they want to get away with immature love stories. Also, please lets have a different storyline for once. This is why I really like SMT:Noctune, DDS and DDS2

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

maybe the bunny ate the gold 0_O?!

This is why I appreciate FFXII's approach. Monster class enemies drop fur, bones, etc. Then you have to go SELL all this newly acquired crap to a store to GET money. It makes so much more sense that way.

Or you can take the FFVIII approach and your team gets a Salary (really wasnt that bad of an idea).

Reluctant hero saves the world with special power that was inside of him all along, that he activates/earns during tragedy.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

well can I at least get the option for voice acting for the main protaganist please? Anyone who rather him be silent just turn the voice off.

It just feels stupid in a day and age where the entire cast has voice acting and the main character does not.

EDIT:

And I was also talking about the mind reading Hero thing. THe co character asks the main a question.....he says nothing......but somehow the co character knew what he was thinking........STUPID!!!!

Chrono Cross, I'm looking at YOU!
