And all the black people who are have hurt feelings after being insulted by racists have a mental illness as well do they?

Thats one of the stupidest statements I have ever read. Anywhere.

Yup, that certainly is one of the stupidest statements I've read anywhere also.

I gave the definition of mental illness above. It should be clear that being of the Negroid race is not a psychological or behavorial pattern.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

Homosexuality is not a mental illness.  The APA hasn't listed it as one since 1973.  In fact, every year when they vote on their list of mental diseases at their convention, the vote to list homosexuality as a mental illness gets smaller every year.  So unless you have some data to prove the last 36 years of American research wrong, don't make these arguments.  They're wrong.

Yes, but why was it reclassified? Was it for valid scientific reasons, or political pressure?

Is it even possible to have a scientific debate on it anymore? I doubt the homosexual lobby groups would stand for it if they did.

I wonder what type of protests and political pressure those that still feel it is a mental illness have to put up with. I bet it would drive the gay rights groups "crazy". <-----

It was reclassified once religious groups stopped having as much influence upon the process as they once did. In order for it to be considered a mental illness it would have to cause either distress or disability, I know enough gay people to know that it causes them neither - at least in a culture which is accepting of them (I live in a country lucky enough to generally be one of the few that is).

In fact same with the entire transgender thing, it causes no distress or disability and as such cannot be considered a mental illness. One of the things that makes me proudest of my country is the fact that we were the first in the world to ever to elect a transexual member of parliament.

I was at the gay and lesbian mardi gra a few weeks back with some of my gay friends. Out of the 300,000 people that went, there were only 26 arrests and nearly all the problems were caused by hateful ignorant homophobes.

I guess being homophobic is a mental illness too.

Ya know, most forms of homosexuality are probably curable with the proper hormone treatments if you catch it before puberty. I'm sure it's just a chemical imbalance in the brain that causes it.

We treat so many other mental illnesses, why do we ignore this one?

Homosexuality is not considered a mental illness by the APA.

i was one of the people that got in trouble last time... im not touching this >_>

I sincerely hope one day there will be no more stories like this one. Things have progressed really well since the 70s but there's still much to go.

Signature goes here!

Considering the general level of maturity in the industry is this really a surprise?

I'm surprised this doesn't happen more with gay people and women.

It was reclassified in part due to studies done at UCLA in the late 60s and early 70s.  They studied a large group of homosexual men in Los Angeles, and found that the percentage of homosexuals with mental illnesses is exactly the same as the percentage of heterosexuals with mental illnesses.  Mental illnesses often come in groups, or one can lead to another.  So if homosexuals were mentally unstable, they would have more mental illnesses than heterosexuals.  But they don't.  So it was concluded that homosexuality is not a mental illness.
