Forums - Sony - Sony cuts costs of PS3 development

It doesn't really affect the multi-million dollar gaming companys because really $10,000 was nothing to them let alone $2000, this really only affects all the PSN games, just means we'll be getting more of them :)

wow ... 80% price drop for dev kits. Imagine if they could do this for their console .... :P

Nah, but I'm not really expecting to see any price drops until the end of this year of even the begining of next.

could this mean a small price drop on regular PS3's aswell???

btw this makes it very difficult for MS to get exclusives from 3rd parties.

"Sir, the cost to port this title just went from $1,500,000 to $1,492,500!" "Darnit Jenkins, I can't justify not porting it anymore... lets do it."

A price cut of anything is a good thing.

As I stated, the devkit cost savings is often multiplied by a factor in the 10s for large projects.

$100K+ savings is nothing to sneeze at.

I should add that many publishers "loan" devkits to external developers they have contracts with, in order to save themselves money, by reducing budgets paid out to developers who may not work with them in the future.

Thus cheaper devkits will have a different effect on 2nd party, and 3rd party published titles than the direct cost-savings of a 1st party, or 3rd party internal title. Namely it will likely increase the chance of games being crossplatform, and possibly further level the playing field for cross platform games, such that the final product differences become even less noticable -- simply because the publishers will have more devkits to loan out.

...for some reason this makes me think of beer.

I saw many words. Many words indeed. two i did not see though: price cut
