Forums - Nintendo - Is the Wii Overpriced?

Considering inflation, the Wii was not overpriced at its release.

It is now, however. Its sales will continue to slow until they knock it down to $199.99 -- and that won't happen until the dollar gets stronger, relative to the yen, again.

The buyers willing to purchase it, at the release price, are beginning to wear thin.

So, PS2 and Xbox were overpriced? Strange, I've never seen any articles about that. GC was the lowest priced one and was superior to PS2 at least, yet people never whined about that. And still GC got last, so price isn't an issue as long as people are willing to pay the price and consoles sell out that fast.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Fullfilled Prophecies

That article is just a shame.

This article boils down to "why should Nintendo be allowed to make profit off hardware?". Obviously the Wii is priced correctly because it's the fastest selling home console of all time. It doesn't matter if there's a hamster running a fucking wheel inside powering the damn thing. If it were overpriced, it would not sell as well as it does. Simple as that. Nintendo should be allowed to make a good profit off each unit sold and shouldn't have to settle for the horrible losing strategies Microsoft and Sony employ to sell hardware with.

Of course it's overpriced. Nintendo make a fortune on each console sold. The components inside a Wii are virtually WORTHLESS in terms of their computational power.

Only way ninty could be paying more than a few pennies for each Wii is down to licensing of IPcustom chips...even then I'm sure the cunning swines got themselves a good deal.

Truth be told, there aren't many people on VGchartz who know what their talking about in terms of hardware costs and just how cheap and nasty the Wii is. It's actually the making of a great console and maybe mssony should have skimped like nintendo did.

actually, in the computer world, the Wii cost is exactly where it should be if you only consider the hardware and not the market. 360 is barely breaking even, or loosing money and so is the PS3 while Wii makes money each time it's sold, by only a small margin, and the hardware does cost about that.

Wait, "continue to slow"?

I'll give you Japan, but I don't think that's the case everywhere else. It certainly isn't the case in the U.S., where it's had the strongest monthly sales in all but three months since its release (launch month, the next month, and Halo 3's release) despite being heavily supply-constrained, yet its nonetheless continued to post impressive YoY increases.

Am I just misunderstanding you?

It's games are but not the console.

Agree. But even DS games are overpriced ($40 WTF?)

@Procastinato

Why would the Wii slow down when it's already up YoY...? In Japan it's slowed down but that's it.

I can't put my finger on it.  Its not up as much as the 360, YoY, as a %.  It smells like a downturn?  I dunno.  Its just a feeling, from watching the weekly numbers roll by, and seeing the "supply meets demand" comments from retailers, as well as seeing piles of them not moving from local stores (or perhaps they are resupplying them really well).

Its like reaching the top of an awesome climb... you can finally see the other side.  It was a great ascent... and now you have to enjoy the view, before you head into the next gen.

no, nintendo knows what's going on

he probably means slowing down, but even in Japan, it's actually still pretty steady, while other consoles have ups and downs, Wii is like a sail boat with stable wind, moving steadily and with good speed.

its selling like hotcakes still so its clear the market is happy with the price. Same goes for the DS and the software on the platforms. they are selling so the market is fine with the price.
