Shio. People talking about genres on the PC slowly dying does not mean that consoles are taking them. It means that they are becoming less relevant - or less profitable - over time.

and RTS are becoming less relevant/profitable?  o_O I mean, Sins of a Solar Empire alone is a good example...

RTSes might be a bad example, I suppose, but this is mostly me talking out of the side of my mouth. I don't keep up with the PC industry that well, I just hear a lot of developers cry havoc.

Honestly, it's the shittier ones that do. Companies like Valve and Blizzard are still raking in billions (even before WoW came out). So what do shitty developers do? Migrate to the consoles, where people have far lower standards for games.

So, basically what is driving current pc gaming is online casual games and MMORPGs.

Pretty much.  Although certain FPS and RTS games seem to do pretty well on the PC.

I'm pretty surprised that WoW brings in 9% of the total PC market revenue though.  Shows what an incredible beast that game is.

PC gaming is not dead in great part because of MMORGs.

World of Warcraft subscriptions alone accounts for roughly 10 percent of the total PC gaming revenues. Add in about the same from all other MMORGs -- and your generating one dollar out of five from a pay-to-play model.

There are certain genres which work better on the PC because of the interface (keyboard) as well.

Another factor I find interesting is the calculation of hardware. I wonder how it was done (not saying it can't be or isn't correct -- but I am always critical of numbers without discussion as to how they were generated).

Mike from Morgantown

Of course, I got back into console gaming because the PC requirements kept changing faster than I wanted to/was able to upgrade.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Bingo. You release the game at the same time as the console versions, or lead on the PC, and tailor it towards the platform's strengths (better graphics, better online, better controls etc) and the odds are you will make money if the game's decent and not dumbed down. Release some crappy port 6-12 months later full of DRM and don't even redo the menus for a mouse and keyboard and you might as well not have bothered.

It's not even that but UT3 is a prime example of what you were talking about. You couldn't set your sensitivity to anything but whole numbers (W..T...F...?), you couldnt do shit in video settings in game (had to go to the ini files to disable bloom and mouse acceleration and other such crap), and so on and so forth.

The main problem is the fact that games are just much simpler now and overall dumbed down. As examples look at what happened to Fallout and Deus Ex when they started getting developed for the consoles as well. FEAR2 is also far worse than FEAR1 was, with the most shitty story I have seen in a while. And you know what the best part is? The developers then whine and bitch and moan about how the PC version is making less money.

Bioware are a prime example of that as well. From the massive and hugely intricate Baldur's Gate 2, which is still selling today, to simplistic dross like Jade Empire in less than 5 years.

I found NWN to be actually even better than BG2. It was ana amazing game with such amazing mods and stuff. Really brought out DND.

I found the main quest a little dull but the mods really gave it legs like you say. BG 2 with the widescreen mod and a few tweaks is still fantastic. It's a bit worrying that Dragon Age has been put back until the console conversions are complete- I hope they don't hobble the PC version.

I did not know they did that.... Now let's see how that goes.
