^Add Twisted Metal to your list.

Epic owns the Gears of War franchise. It will be interesting to see what happens in two years with that.

I like the diversification in Sony's library. I will take a lot of 2 million sellers over 2 5 million plus sellers any day.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

@ dbot, I am just saying that they need to develop one or two of these games to be 5m+ games, which will potentially move some hardware

They need a JRPG First Party exclusive. They need to buy Level-5 because they really make good JRPG's [White Knight Chronicles, Dragon Quest 8, Dark Cloud Franchise]

Not sure if they can really buy them though but I wish they did.

I can seriously see this being made lol. But Sony has a 3 game exclusive game deal with Media Molecule. I would really want to see something else then another "LittleBig" thing so Sony can own a new IP :P

Battlefield Bad Company 2 > Modern Warfare 2

a JRPG that puts FF to a side you say. well what else than LEGEND OF THE DRAGOON¡¡¡¡. SONY needs to bring this ip to life again

I agree with your point.  It seems like all of the major releases this gen have always had something that would prevent it from selling in the 5 million range.  MGS4 was a stealth niched, LBP was a little hardcore, Killzone 2 had to deal with Killzone 1/2005 CGI trailer/weighty controls, etc.

You know that Warhawk is a game that could fit the bill.  It is some of the best gameplay on the system, if they could upgrade the graphics and add a good single player campaign it may be a canidate.  I agree with Uncharted being a great franchise, but unless they can figure out a great multi-player system I don't see it going beyond the 2.5 - 3 million range.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

killzone, god of war, uncharted, twisted metal and getaway are franchises that can end up huge if sony get those names heard to the public.

they need Zipper to spend 4 years after MAG is done to make Socom 4

I think they're working on Killzone to become their big shooter franchise. What they need now is their own Final Fantasy/Pokemon/Monster Hunter. The Legend of Dragoon is a nice IP that they could work with, but they'd need to form a great internal team to do so, like they've done with Polyphony and Team ICO.

And I think Killzone 2 will do a bit more than 3 million. It was tracking right along World at War the first few weeks, and then fell below WaW mainly because WaW enjoyed great legs from the holidays. WaW will sell at the very least 4 million lifetime (though it's legs down the road probably won't be as strong as CoD4's, given the quality of each title), and Killzone 2 should come near that (I'm thinking no lower than 3.5 million, even if it's due to bundles). It'll probably have a decent first holiday season later this year to help it along.

Shooters generally do better numbers on the 360 (especially CoD) because of the 360's exceptionally strong presence in NA. It's no coincidence that all of teh 360's top sellers are shooters.

Sony has a decent presence in Japan, and they need to capitalize on this with a strong JRPG (which should sell well in Japan, and the rest of the world, like GT). They need something more than Level 5's "pretty good" ARPGs. They need something with good gameplay, a great story, and extremely high, Final Fantasy level production values.

I dont think marketing White Knight Chronicles (or any other jRPG for that matter) is a good idea. It simply wont work and will be a waste of (limited) resources. Despite being the most discussed type of games here at vgchartz, console jRPGs have lost its appeal in the West. There wont be another Final Fantasy no matter what marketing campaign Sony is willing to launch.

That being said I see two candidates to become really big franchises: Killzone (Sony must create its own Halo and this one seems like it has potential) and God of War (brutal, cruel, bloody action - americans already eat it up, it's easy to market and can become bigger than it is now)

Everything else I dont think has a good chance of becoming big.

I think that jRPGs can sell in the West, LO sold well due to word of mouth, and with good advertising and good reviews it could certainly do well, and is a worthy long term investment in my view as they intend it to become a trilogy

Killzone is certainly a contender and there is certainly a chance, but I can just feel it getting old a lot quicker than an Uncharted franchise, and I have more confidence in Naughty Dog producing great games every time. Guerilla aren't experienced enough yet.

As for God of War, I think III is the end, Jaffe said that it will explain why there are no more Greek myths, or something cliched like that, but I think Kratos' tale will be done

I agree with you there, but the treasure hunting action/adventure genre just isn't that big these days.  Uncharted is probably the best scoring and best sellign game like this we've seen in quite some time, and I don't think they could've hoped for more.

But maybe a better advertising campaign over the 2007 holiday season could've changed that.

God of War is also in this boat.  God of War I was easily the best selling hack n' slach title last gen, with only the original Devil May Cry coming close.    However, God of War Only managed to sell 3.21 million units.  The best selling title in it's genre, on by far the best selling console last gen, and it only managed to hit 3.21 million.

Sony has some excellent franchises that sell well enough for what they are.  They just need more franchises from better selling genres.  GT was their first, and Killzone looks like it could be their second.  I think JRPGs could be their next, but they've only ever dealt with that genre through second parties since the ps1 days.
