FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

SANTA CLARA, CA—MARCH 19, 2009—NVIDIA Corporation today announced that it has been approved as a third party tools solution provider for the Wii™ console. As a result, the NVIDIA® PhysX™ technology SDK is now available to registered Wii developers.

“Nintendo has reshaped the home entertainment and video game market with the success of the Wii console. Adding a PhysX SDK for Wii is key to our cross-platform strategy and integral to the business model for our licensed game developers and publishers,” said Tony Tamasi, senior vice president of content and technology at NVIDIA. “With NVIDIA PhysX technology, developers can easily author more realistic game environments for the evolving demands of a broad class of Wii gamers.”

The NVIDIA PhysX software development kit (SDK) consists of a full-featured API and robust physics engine, designed to give developers, animators, level designers, and artists unprecedented creative control over character and object physical interactions by allowing them to author scalable physics in real time.

The PhysX SDK for the Wii console, and all major gaming platforms, are available for license directly from NVIDIA. For more information on licensing PhysX SDKs or NVIDIA PhysX technology, please visit: www.nvidia.com/physx.

What are your thoughts? Now it's official that Nvidia is giving out the PhysX kits for third-party developers to use the software on Nintendo Wii games. Don't worry, as X360 third-party developers are getting their kits soon from Nvidia, or already have.

Um, that was the PS3. This news was posted on March 19th.

Physx has been on Wii for years via middleware. Check out the back of your Wii games sometime.

Really? Which games are there? Could you care to point them out for me? Thanks.

Good stuff, programming physics is a pain in the arse. PhysX really helps developers out. I remember seeing them the first year the company existed at GDC. I was on the fence if a seperate physics processor was overkill. Now, I definitely see the need for it

I think you have PhysX confused with Havok.

Nothing wrong with a little competition in the world of physics middleware.

Edit: And as usual, Viper just saunters in with his spurs jingling and sets us all straight.

Physx has been available for use on all 3 consoles for a long while either directly from nVidia or through certain game engines that utilized it (Emergent's Gamebryo for instance).

What this does it allow ALL registered Nintendo Wii developers to download the Physix SDK for free without having to buy a license from nVidia or rely on specific game engines.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

I think what kept them relevant was being bought by nVidia. Buying a separate card seemed a little over the top, but incorporating it into the GPU is a great idea.
