8.0

The PC version of this fun and fascinating role-playing game is far superior to its Xbox 360 counterpart.

The Good

  • A long, epic tale in a fascinating new fantasy world
  • Fun, uniquely strategic battle system
  • Gorgeous musical score
  • Beautiful art design.

The Bad

  • Some texture pop-in and screen tearing
  • Battle system can be obtuse.

For comparison, the 360 version got 6.5. Excellent news, can't wait to play this game, I'm glad that they fixed the glitches!

The Last Remnant (PC Version) - IGN Review - 6.8

Closing Comments

The Last Remnant isn't for those who crave story and strong characterization in their single-player role-playing games. It's a long grind buoyed by a battle system that's alternately enjoyable for its depth and complexity but also frustrating for its unpredictability and lack of transparency. This version is much improved from the Xbox 360 counterpart, so anyone looking for the best version of Square Enix's title will find it here. Those who crave the freedom to delve into dungeon after dungeon in a large game world might find a lot to enjoy in this title despite its issues, as there are a lot of moving pieces to its systems. Considering the general dullness of the setting and narrative conflict, however, the game gives you little reason to stick around other than to drive up your characters' statistics and learn new attacks.

5.5 Presentation
A weak, disjointed storyline, forgettable and dislikable characters, and a near total lack of personality. The menus do their job but could have used some tweaking for the PC platform.

6.5 Graphics
You won't find anything breathtaking here and quite a few of the dungeons have a bland, boring appearance. Some nicer areas and armor designs keep things interesting.

6.0 Sound
Poor character voice acting is offset somewhat by some decent tunes for exploration and battle. Generally strong sound effects.

7.0 Gameplay
Lots of interesting aspects to the battle system marred by a few unpredictable elements that undermine the tactical elements.

7.5 Lasting Appeal
If you're in it for the fighting, this is a long, long game with crafting systems, side quests, and more to divert your attention from the main grind.

6.8
Passable OVERALL

(out of 10 / not an average)

6.0 Sound / "decent tunes" my ass. The music of Last Remnant is awesome.

I'm still going to buy the 360 version of this game. It deserves to be in every JRPG fan library. It might have technical faults but reviewers just slammed this game real bad.

So that means they fixed some flaws.

Why? It looks the PC version is better.

I didn't like the demo. it didn't help that the game didn't recognize my Xbox controller, I had an absurd loading time to enter a battle and the demo didn't have a tutorial. anyway, my impression was that the battle system was too complex to fight bugs. the pop-in is no different from any other UE3 game out there, be it Mass Effect, Gears or even UT3, the problem is that this one has constant loadings.

if they ever put it on weekend deal I may consider it, otherwise I ain't buying it

Not everyone has the kind of system TLR needs to run fine...

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

It's a fairly cheap game. I might give it a chance, but I can't help thinking it's going to like XII or Kingdom Hearts... Curse this damn SE fear of mines.

weak disjointed story? lacking characterizations?

I'm disappointed that S-E would let the above happen. We all know they can and have done better in the storytelling aspect. It didn't completely ruin my interest since I liked the battle system from what I played of the PC version but still...
