" Star Ocean 4 - What went wrong with its sales?"

Wrong console, like I didn't say that before. I already predicted this game would bomb on the 360, but no one around here listened and SE is just as usual plain stupid. Userbase doesn't necessary mean more sales, sheesh. It means what kind of gamers own that console and as BengaBenga mentioned, 360 owners are simply "no" JRPG gamers. If this was a test for SE they shouldn't have messed around with Star Ocean.

Lost Odyssey worked very well in the west because it was as westernized as it could be while still being japanese at heart. Which is what japanese companies should be doing if they want their games to sell here.

The Gooch got it right - he and his crew sold 650k copies of pure-old-school turn-based combat in the land of the first person shooter.

Lost Odyssey worked very well in the West because it has in the cover "From the Creator of Final Fantasy", also MS advertising... Although what you're saying is true, the game has this FF-X feeling while it has a lot of western elements, i personally love the game...

Hmph! I told you, and I got banned for that!

360's owners don't give a sh*** about Jrpg's, even FFXIII will bomb on 360 (less than 1 millions). The 360 is a good console, great shooters, racers and wathever you want, but for rpg's, that's on DS, PSP and PS3 (atelier rorona, summon night 5, and a third one announced in only a few days !!!)

You honestly think FFXIII will sell less then 1 million copies?

If LO could sell nearly 800k copies then FF surely will sell more then 1 million.

yep, I'm pretty sure!

here's an interesting interview
http://www.strategyinformer.com/xbox360/staroceanthelasthope/interview.html

"Strategy Informer: Do you feel that the Xbox 360 is still under appreciated in Japan to a certain extent?

Yoshinori Yamagishi: It is still a mystery to me why Japanese people have been shying away from Xbox 360 so much. I expect maybe there’s still a very strong ‘Sony’s the best’ majority, but maybe it’s not appreciated as a console because Japanese people look at it as a Microsoft product and there’re still some negative connotations there."

Star Ocean was a Playstation game

People who wanted it bought a PS3

Then they announced it for the 360

People who bought PS3 had no more money

Good game, bad Console choice

If the PS3 had RPGs, I'd own one. There is Disgaea 3 and Valkyria Chronicles and not much else. The only JRPG that a sold well in the West this gen is Lost Odyssey. Last time I checked it wasn't on PS3 it was on 360. Maybe WKC will change that, but unless it does the PS3 has only proved it can sell JRPGs in Japan. Considering that the top selling 360 games in Japan are all JRPGs, that isn't saying much.

How about we wait for a JRPG to actually sell well before we label any sales as failures.
