You don't see Nintendo saying things like this and most PS2 owners are switching to the Wii, not the 360.

Yeah, more PS2 folks are going to Wii than Xbox 360

The "PS3 is selling more with aligned launches" argument, while still relevant, is losing validity with each passing month. If you console launches late, you are expected to eventually compete with the competition in the current time frame, not the past. You cannot always use the "we launched a year late" excuse for the entire generation. The Wii was able to do it. Sony needs to start doing it as well.

Sony is doing fine, all things considered. Hardware sales are better that most people expected, software sales are great, and their lineup for the upcoming year looks better than the 360. Start competing in the present, not the past.

The further problem with this argument is that YOY, the 360 is outperforming it's previous sales, while the PS3 is underperforming it's own, therefor even if you aligned the launches, the 360 is trending positively vis-a-vis the PS3.

However, I agree, Sony is in no danger of suddenly disappearing. They have to be careful (as all companies do in this market), but if Sony's goal is profit, not marketshare (as noted here), then they are on the right path.

Sony is certainly in no risk of suddenly disappearing. As for the "2-4 years from now" timeframe, I'm not sure. It really depends on how this recession evolves, if it stays this bad or gets much worse they're going to have a hard time not running out of cash.

Aside from stroking fans' ego, what difference does it make that the gap is 8 million and growing? Or what difference would it make if it was 0, or reversed?
In this phase Sony is still trying to become profitable on the hardware, as such its greatest interest with the sales for the time being is to keep developers and customers interested in its platform.

Nowadays the gap might be 8M, but the absolute numbers are 30 to 21.5, not 9 to 1. As such a developer that has to decide if spending that 30% more to go multiplatform sees a ratio of 10:7 consoles in X360:PS3. Close enough to parity that both platform are considered with equal weight by third parties, moneyhatting allowing. Same thing would happen if the roles were reversed.

Actually, the exception is the nested japanese submarket, where the ratio is 3:1 in favor of the PS3 and that might mean a number of exclusive titles of specific genres (JRPGs, SRPGs) coming from those smaller software houses that aren't that interested into expanding to the west.
In that sense, at Sony they are probably right now much more interested in how to bring down the hardware costs and how to promote their brand than in the 8M gap. Their mission of putting the PS3 on the map again in the eyes of developers is accomplished yet.

As for the libraries, both consoles have good libraries, but it takes some fervid imagination to dismiss Sony's first party titles as a "handful" when compared to the 360. Let's wait to see what is announced at GDC and E3, but for the time being I don't really see a lineup of titles for the 360 eclipsing the PS3 one.

This is maddness! I would expect the M$ pr guy to say that PS3 is pwning 360 now!

:P

Well, Sony came out with, "Killzone 2 will drive 360 owners to consider the PS3".  So, the Microsoft PR guy fires back by saying, regarding Killzone 2, that eventhough Killzone 2 was released, sales are off last year for the system.  Not sure why anyone would be surprised that Microsoft responded.  And yes, this is his job to say these things.

In regards to, "But the PS3 is tracking better than the 360 did during the same time frame", this is only relevant if either there is a time distortion that causes the current number of consoles out there to match the same timeframe, or somehow the 360 will stop selling titles or go into decline.

All PR Plays dirty, not  something new.

If SOny was in Microsoft's position, they would be slinging the crap too, same with Nintendo. If Sony and MS were in Nintendo's position, they would just keep quiet. If MS or Nintendo were in Sony's position, they would try to make things look better than they really are.

Just how PR works.

hey dont beat the guy up... its his job to spin.

You do realize how hypocritical and biased you are. Sure.....Aaron Grenburg talks more fanboy trash and 'Its just his job' but Sony say that their console will be an entertainment centrepiece for 10 years and they are 'ridiculosly arrogant'

Really? maybe in America...I don't believe Sony in ps2 times talked shit about other companies especially M$

notice that although Sony was the one who toke Sega out of the console besnius, sega had no hard feelings becouse there was no PR problems between the two

And actually Sony always talked Good about Nintendo and Sega and all companies

of course I am sometimes biased.... arent you?

But the 10 year entertainment hub thing is far more ridiculous than the facts grenburg decided to spin.

The PS1 was produced for over 10 year.  The PS2 is currently in year 9.  What is so ridiculous about Sony expecting the PS3 being around for 10 years?
