Forums - Gaming - IGN: Why DVD's better than Blu-Ray....

I have been waiting for someone to post this article.  I've read the article and all I can say is wow.  This is the best argument the DVD writer at IGN can make against Blu-ray?  It's pretty sad, I'm not sure why this is considered an interesting read.

Here are his points:

  • It's Cheaper Than Blu-ray:  No kidding.  Really, the original xbox and PS2 are cheaper than the 360 and the PS3, but I bought the more expensive systems because they offerred the features I wanted.
  • Mo' Technology, Mo' Problems:  Mo' really?  I guess we shouldn't progress with technology because it may not work correctly 100% of the time.  HDTV's have "Mo' Technology" as well, I guess people shouldn't buy them either?
  • You Already Own A Ton of DVDs:  God, it would be great if a Blu-ray player could play your DVD library and perhaps improve the quality in some way, oh I forgot that's what a Blu-ray player does.
  • Up-Conversation Really Works:  Really, as opposed to it not working.  Good thing all Blu-ray players upconvert.  But you know what's 4x better than upconversion a native resolution of 1920x1080 with a 40.0Mbps bit rate.
  • You Can't Get That on Blu-ray: It's a good thing your Blu-ray players can play your DVDs.  There is no reason to buy an older movie on Blu-ray.  If the native film is of low quality, then obviously you aren't going to take advantage of Blu-ray.  I remember some dumb author complaining about the Planet of the Apes wasn't any better on Blu-ray.  Why would it be?
  • Blu-ray is A Stop-Gap:  Really.  It's a stop gap for the next 12 years.  I fully expect another optical format to replace Blu-ray, because we are light years away from a digital distribution model that can actually work using Internet technologies.

genius... pure genius you are! thank you for taking the time to write that, this should be a pinned quote on every BluRay VS DVD thread in all forums :P

I still don't understand why people make so many "versus" topics about DVDs and BluRay.

If you get a BluRay player, you can enjoy both. Unless you can't afford the lowest costing BluRay player, in which case collecting movies probably isn't what you need to be doing anyway, it seems like a pretty easy choice.

^yes. Not by the topic in general but what you wrote before you edited.

Check out my game about moles ^

I remember in my front room at my parents house, they had cabinets full of VHS tapes and they were wondering whether to get a DVD player or not which at the time was about £200 and they wouldn't want to replace all the films they had ,well its simple. They bought a DVD player and kept the VHS player then DVD players became cheaper and cheaper and more the norm of what to find in homes, exactly what is going to be happening to blue ray

Come on are people seriously questioning whether Blu Ray is better than DVD? DVD is obviously better for the general consumer and will remain that way for a few years. When assessing which is better IGN are taking into comparative costs. Which is better a player that costs $99 and you can get movies for $9 on it or a player that costs $250 and the same $9 cost $18 albeit that the $250 player and $18 movies gives better picture quality? I bet you anyone here that chooses not to accept this is a Sony fan and/or has a PS3.

Seems that DVD is going to be the #1 format for the next 2-3 years at least...that's a LONG time for brd to find it's footing, imho...

There are alternatives.

For people who don't believe BR will take off (It's really quite simple).

- There is NO digital distribution method that has the speed, performance, space, etc to completely facilitate a 100% digital distribution for a majority of people, additionally if people are paying for something they like to have physical items (IMHO) far more than 'digital' ones. This is a mindset that will have to somehow be changed and it's pretty far into the future IMHO.

- HD TVs are starting to take off. To fully enjoy your HD TV, you need HD ready channels (Which is rapidly increasing in the amount of), HD movies and HD everything. The linear progression is going to be buying a home theater or High Def player to go with your nice new Television.

- All you need to see on how quickly BR will start to takeover the market is go to your local Best Buy, Wal Mart, etc. Notice how large the Blu-Ray section is getting? It seems like every couple of weeks it grows by a few rows. This is going to plant the idea into consumers heads to upgrade.

- While disc formats will improve in the future no doubt, quite honestly how much better picture clarity are they going to get beyond 1080p? I personally don't believe we will see nearly as much of an improvement in future disc formats. I believe 1080p will be around for quite sometime and probably longer than DVD. This all bodes well for Blu-Ray.

+1.

To every anti-BD article that comes out, because they are all the same just worded differently, this needs to be posted.  The only thing I would add is that Sony doesn't own the format any more than Panasonic and Phillips.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
