PS3 exclusive Ryu Ga Gotoku 3 is a smash hit. The game sold 372,000 copies in its first week and is one of the biggest selling copies on the PLAYSTATION 3.

The game has in-game tie-ups with 27 different companies, including a karaoke parlor, a sake distillery and a tanning salon. The voice cast boasts some of Japan's biggest stars, and a theme song by popstar Eikichi Yazawa. The game also features model Rina Sakurai, who I interviewed for Arcade Mania.

SEGA announced today that over 500,000 copies of the game have been shipped.

Nice. hopefully it comes to other regions. I remember seeing one of the first trailers at TGS live. It was pretty awesome.

There's no reason this couldn't be popular in the West. Sega could have a huge franchise on their hands if they were smart.

even if they brought the game over now with voice overs for every major language and a multi-million-dollars/euros marketing campaign I wouldn't expect the game to sell more than 500k outside of Japan

Imho they should go with english subtitles only and keep orginal VA this will only sell to hardcore maniacs anyway :D

has anyone ever wondered if this game would have happened- if shenmue was never released? I doubt it.



Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

That is probably true, as I think they just wrote a new setting for the existing Shenmue game system, but still there is a slight chance they already had the concept/setting rdy and just used the Shenmue-like system, because it fits to it the best.

If you look closely at it you will realise it is based on action jrpgs with realtime battle in a confined place, a basic beat'em Up engine (which they refinded a bit and added several weapons and interaction with objects and surroundings). You gain experience and level up your skills with it/gain new moves and ofcourse there is the focus on a linear, cinematic, over-the-top storyline (with tons of small sidequests and missions).

The things that set Yakuza apart from a "normal" ajrpg in my opinion is the setting, the focus on a single character and the massive amount of mini-games.


With that in mind it wouldn't be outlandish to think they might have come up with something similar to Shenmue, if they already had the setting for the game, but it might have been used for a turn based jrpg or even srpg aswell.
