Probably the 360, it has been expanding it's lead on the ps3 for a while now...

Actually, that's incorrect.  The PS3 sold way more units worldwide in 2007 and the X360 sold only 30K more units worldwide in 2008.  We are just 3 months into 2009.

You might want to look at the numbers again.

2007:
PS3 - 7.6 million
X360 - 7.9 million

2008:
PS3 - 10.3 million
X360 - 11.1 million

2009 so far:
PS3 -  1.8 million
X360 - 2.3 million

You're using incorrect numbers.  You are using numbers that are guessed and not from an official source.  That means they are not accurate.

Let me get this straight.  You chastise me for using the readily available SALES numbers right here and then link me to a web site I've never heard of that makes the dubious debate of comparing SHIPPED units?

Me saying the PS3 can't beat the 360 isn't just a wld guess or because I think the games will make the difference, it's just looking at the numbers.

If the PS3 dropped price tomorrow and suddenly became such a selling machine that it outsold the 360 by 100k per month, it would take more than 6 1/2 years for the PS3 to just catch up to the 360.

In order to just catch up to 360 in a reasonable amount of time, say two years, the PS3 would have to OUTSELL (not just sell) the 360 more than 350k per month for two straight years.

So yeah...

Of course, that assumes that the X360 will still be on the market for as long as the PS3.  That would be incorrect.  MS said the X360 might be on the market for 7 years.  The PS3 lifecycle has been announced as 9 ot 10 years.  That's a 2 to 3 year period with NO X360.  Now, at 2.3 million consoles per quarter, how long would it take to make up 7 to 8 million console sales?  Here's a hint: it's nowhere near 6 years.  Hell, it's nowhere near 2 years!

This just requires below average math skills to figure out.

Sony (nor any comapny) doesn't determine how long their console stays on the market.  The consumers, publishers and retailers decide that.  The "10 year plan" is marketing 101.

The likelihood is that 360 will come first between the two HD machines. A shame for me as i hate to see such poor workmanship rewarded. I just hope it doesn't set a president next gen. Not set in stone though. seeing as the 360 was 5.something mill ahead 6 months ago, now its 8 proves how quickly things can change

assumption is the mother of all f**k ups

not great at futurology... history is yet to be made... some people in 1985 believe that in 2000 we would have flying cars and in 2009 i am still in the ground!

But as you can see, the marketing worked out well. The PS2 (still the most successful console of all time) has 1 year to go to reach 10 years and look at the sales, it is just outdated. That is not a bad thing, but customers chose Wii / Xbox360 or the PS3 instead these days.

Why would the PS3 last that long while being the worst selling console for 2 years in a row? (Sorry, I have to phrase it that clearly. Otherwise some people will never get it)

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

the 360 imo will win it. the ps3 is in a bit of a hole right now with price, sales attach rate etc. while the xbox just seems to be growing, growing, growing.

ps3 just wait till it gets a 300$ tag

look at re5 1st day ww sales

the 360 has done allot of good to the gaming world though

                                                                      Play Me

360 will be more profitable, have more games, and have more sales than the PS3 for the part of this generation that matters.

Sure Sony might drag the PS3 out for 10 years, but by that point passing the 360 in sales would be meaningless since the next gen would be well underway.

All fanboy bs aside; what do ya think?

I honestly think 360 will win this gen.

If you are talking about the Xbox 360 and PS3 only, then I'd have to say the XBox 360 right now. Even with a PS3 price drop, I don't see the PS3 catching the Xbox 360 anytime soon. If they lose the 2009 holiday the chances are even slimmer. Even if Sony finally did get the price down to $250 by 2010, they still wouldn't catch the Xbox 360 before M$ released a new game console. Once that happens, last gen is pretty much over. I still think M$ will keep the XBox 360 on the market for another 2-3yrs after releasing a new game console. By then the 360 Pro will be $125 and the Elite will be $200.

Out of the 3 consoles, the Wii is going to win this generation. I can't see the Xbox 360 or PS3 catching the Wii.

Yes, and that's why it'll have a hard time catching the competition. Unlike the PS2 which launched a year ahead of the XBox and Gamecube and literally had every developer in the world making games for it, the PS3 doesn't have these luxuries. It's going to take longer for the PS3 to get to the PS2's price point and it will never have the huge amount of quality software that the PS2 had. The PS3 has about 1/3 (or less) developers then the PS2 had to make games for Sony's system. The PS3 should still be able to sell about 40million systems in it's lifetime if it last 10yrs, but I doubt it'll last that long. I think Sony will launch a new system way before 10yrs. Within the next 3-4 years I think they will launch a new console.  I'm 100% positive that M$ will bring out a new consoles in 2011 (or 2012 at the lastest). Expect rumors and rumblings at next years E3.
