Forums - Sony - PS3 Pricedrop in the near future? This Supporter Says No!

when you read those reports......from the beginning of the PS3......that it cost sony $250 or whatever it was on every console they sold/made......i mean it doesn't sound like good business does it really.....

what was the boss of gaming thinking he must of been an idiot if it is true.....how does it make any sense......

and then the so called credit crunch comes along...it's amazing they are still even in business if all this is true.......it would be nice to know the real facts of whats going on.....

Price drops will IMHO be here in a matter of weeks.

The reason is SONY cannot afford not to drop the price.

Its not about the beating of Microsoft or Nintendo its about keeping the PS3 a commercially viable platform.

In recent weeks murmurs of discontent have been coming from third party DEVS such as EA about Sony needing to push the PS3 more.

The hidden implied threat is that if Sony doesnt keep their userbase on a par with Xbox then PS3 ports or even lead games will be very much put to the bottom of the development pile.

I think the thought of being left as a video game pariah will be all the impetus Sony need to cut the price if only by a token amount.

I agree with the OP

I doubt that. Look at RE5 sales, and NG2 which is getting ported to the PS3. The only way third-parties would abandon the PS3 for certain projects is if they shift them from the HD consoles to the Wii...

That was right before they announced Dead Space 2 for PS360 and a cheap spin-off for the Wii, wasn't it?

As many here know I'm mostly a Wii/PC supporter (though I have a 360 too, a console I like mostly because of NGB and NG2), but I don't think third parties are shifting that much software to the Wii.

Can you please provide some evidence to support these claims. Modern PCs to my knowledge have a lot more memory RAM, faster processors and are far more powerful than the PS3.

Blu-Ray format is future proof?  It would be so ironic if BD was obsolete in  a few years time which would be the start of the next generation

400GB and 1TB Blu-Rays would be expensive and unlikely to sell well in a downwards global market. The costs of 400GB and 1TB Blu-Ray players would be atronomical. Multi-layered Blu-Ray discs? Single Blu-Ray disc stores around 50GB of data on it. 8 or 20 times that storage capacity on one disc would be expensive.

Yes the PS3 is more powerful then most PC's. Most PC's aren't hardcore gaming rigs. Thats why games like WoW are among the most popular PC games. WoW can run on most any PC's. And yes the 1TB BD will run on any blueray player: http://www.techradar.com/news/video/pioneer-1tb-blu-ray-disc-in-the-works-490214

I agree, that a price drop for PS3 is not the only awnser to Sony's problems. With better marketing, software, and services the PS3 could move way more units at the price it is at. In fact I think just marketing it better would do worlds of differance. As hard as it is to believe, most people still don't know the PS3 plays Blu-ray movies, and for the most part, people I talk to don't even know the PS2 can play DVD's. This is the mainstream people that still call DVD's, CD's, If Sony can reach out and make more great commercials like the movie download machine commercial, I think that it would help sales a lot.

Now if they have to go with a price cut I still think they need to go about it in a way they can allow them to still sell some units at a profit. As I have said before, if they have to drop the price, here is the ideal way;

-$299
80GB Console
1 Dualshock 3
1 ethernet cable
1 composite cable

-$399
160GB Console
1 Dualshock 3
1 ethernet cable
1 HDMI cable

-$499
250GB Console
1 Dualshock 3
1 official headset
1 ethernet cable
1 HDMI cable
+2 extra USB
+card readers

IMO they would be stupid not to go with a gameplan similar to this. HDD's are all basically the same price, and when you buy in bulk as they do the cot between a 80 and 250GB HDD is mabye $10 - 20. Then you add in another 10 - 20 for the HDMI in the higher models, and 30 for the headset in the 250GB sku, and Sony is selling consumers around 70 more dollars worth the stuff for 200 more.

Now to us this is a scam, but to most people they do not care because they are to scared to open the system, and they won't mind paying the extra money to get a 250GB HDD right out of the box. This is why Microsofts plan is genious, and something that Sony is really going to have to take notice of if they want to compete.

Final Note; PS2 BC would be the best software/service they could add. To me it means nothing, but to many people, the idea of dropping 400 on a PS3 that can not play their old PS2 games is insane.

Not adding HDMI to every model woulkd be a waste of resources. Its dosnt cost much to include, idk how much,  certainly not as mch as producing two different motherboards otherwise M$ would probably be implimenting this with the arcade.
