A price drop would help, but not in any tremendous way some hope.

If you don't trust this sites figures then why come here? On topic I think it would have an effect but as others have said it's not going to cause sales to explode.

I'm in the forums. It's not about the site's figures. A smart person understands that an educated guess is STILL just a guess. That's what those numbers are based on.

If you consider lowering the price of the 60gbs to clear out stock a completely separate pricedrop.
Ultimately, the low end SKU was lowered by $100 to $399, and the high end SKU was lowered by $100 to $499.

I simply don't think the general public is concerned with wi-fi and blu-ray... IF they are in the market for a video game console. NOW for the group of people who are looking for both a video game console and a blu-ray player, yes it is a better value. But that is a subset of the market (and a small one) not the entire market. Assuming that everyone wants to upgrade to Blu-Ray is a bit too narrow minded for me. Otherwise I honestly have no idea how a price cut would affect sales...I'd guess a big spike up front for those who were waiting to get one, with a gradual decrease to slightly below 360's sales (economy is bad just about everywhere). |
...And, a standard HDD(larger too), web browser, wireless print server, etc.
BTW, there were 50 million homes with Wi-Fi in them in 2007. It's built into almost every new PC sold for the past few years. You think that's a small market? That's strange.

I am a smart person and this forum is still under the banner of vgchartz.
Given the current Company situation and announcements of pay freezes and layoffs it still sounds that Sony are not in an ideal position for a price cut.
Given the original posters comments I wonder if they should even cut the price at all. I would argue they should stay with the margin for a while, the PS3 is actually holding up very well considering and this year does see some attractive titles that should help keep the sales coming in. I realize the risks if they continue without a significant discount but I would suggest they continue for as long as they can, as all that will happen is they will spark a price war with the Wii now seeing a slowing of sales and the 360 trying to keep its upward trend which is bound to also start slowing soon.
Damned if you do and Damned if you do not...

I know that I for one are fed up of going round friends houses trying to explain and or fix Wi Fi issues.
I now recommend homeplugs out of hand and although I have Wi Fi in my home everything that needs a reliable connection gets a home plug and that includes games consoles.

Keeping Sigs obscure since 2007, Passed by the Sig police 5July10.A $50 pricecut will bring the PS3 sales close to the 360 sales. A $100 cut will have the PS3 outsell the 360 at a similar rate that it did in the first half of 2008. I believe that MS will counter any PS3 pricedrops on their Pro and Elite models, but those drops will have minimal impact on 360 sales. A bulk of the 360 sales are Arcade units at $199, and MS is already losing too much on that price.
The PS3's value proposition compared to the 360:
There are many other features that can be touted for either console, but if I was Sony these would be the points I would emphasize.
The PS3 has had 1 $100 price drop. It launched with a 20Gig at $499 and a 60Gig at $599. The 20 Gig was redesigned with less features and launched as the current 40 Gig without BC at $399. The 360 has actually seen more price-cuts than the PS3.
Thanks for the input, Jeff.
